How to sanitize used machine?

Post by tonycog » Wed Jul 07, 2010 12:22 pm

Today I received my backup machine. I'm pretty excited, as I need a Bi-PAP AutoSV and they are pricey, but I found a great deal on Craigslist and my machine arrived today. The best part is that the machine has 1.6 hours of use; essentially brand-new. The sad part is that I bought it from a friend of the machine's deceased owner - the friend told me "Maybe he should have used it more." The smart card data shows 1 hour, 43 minutes of use on 1 night in April of 2008.

My question is this: What do I need to do to clean and sanitize this machine? I will change the filters and thoroughly clean the humidifier tank, but what else should I do to make sure this thing is clean and safe?

Thanks,
Tony

Put new filters in, set it outside and let in run in the fresh air for 6-7 hours during the day. Throw those filters away, put another set of new filters in (or does this particular device have just one filter - whichever) and you are good to go.

Think. Sleep labs have no guarantee on the health of their clients coming in for in-lab PSGs. Sleep labs certainly don't somehow tear apart and sterilize their PSG PAP machines after each PSG use. Air is NOT blowing from the patient INTO these PAPs, the PAPs are blowing air OUT of themselves and INTO the patient.

Throw the hose away if its not in its original sealed packaging if that makes you feel more comfortable and use new hose.

With that little usage, I (personally) wouldn't discard any of the parts.......just wash the tank, hose and foam filter. If there was a white/fine filter in it, I would probably chuck that (I've never used one in any of my machines, anyway).

Ooops, yeah. I forgot about the humidifier water tank. Just toss a PoliDent Denture Cleansing Tablet into the tank w/some fairly hot water, shake, let soak, rinse w/vinegar & water mixture, let dry. You're good to go.

What will the Polident tablet do? I don't have any experience with Polident or dentures, at least not yet.

Thanks,
Tony

Its a good cleanser, deoderizer, freshener. It will remove mineral deposits from tanks that were filled w/tap water or well water rather than distilled water.

Did someone actually dismantled the machine to clean it?

You can buy a cold sterilizing solution from most pharmacies and wipe it all down and take a Q-tip and swab the outlet and any other area reachable with the solution.

I also agree with replacing the hose as the person who used it also exhaled into the mask/hose and since you don't know about any health issues they may have had it only makes sense + they aren't expensive.
