Post-Op (Sinus Surgery) Use of xPAP?

Post by DHC » Thu Oct 28, 2010 8:05 pm

Has anyone had sinus surgery - in my case turbinate resection, septoplasty, and several other sinus procedures - and then used your xPAP immediately (that night) thereafter?

Reason I ask is that I am told the sinuses (upper airway) are filled with packing following the surgery - so nothing is going to get through the nasal passages. It leaves only breathing through the mouth (using a FF mask) to achieve any airway splint.

Has anyone been through this?

Your surgeon should have covered that!! If he didn't, you really need to call ASAP and find out from him. Just as a guess, the last thing *I* would want to do following sinus surgery is blow forced air into them.

I probably had barraged him with so many questions that we just managed to skip over that one - but I agree, it is an issue to raise to the surgeon, and I will. Just thought someone here may have been through it, so thought I'd ask while I was thinking about it.

Thanks

He should have advised no CPAP until after packing is out. I slept upright in a recliner (not easy) for about two weeks postop, then went back to CPAP after splints were out.

I had the Septoplasty and some polyps removed this past May. My instructions were...no CPAP for 7 days. I slept in a recliner. I cheated and started back on CPAP at 5 days, but, I slightly reduced my pressure. My surgeon didn't use 'packing' or splints...he used some type of gel.
