Are you new to CPAP, or is this something that just started happening after being OK for a period of time? When I first started on the machine, I'd wake up after 2 or 3 hours, and then it would take an hour or two before I was ready to sleep again. I suspect that my body was so happy to get 2 hours of good sleep (after all the years of bad sleep) that it thought it was done for the night. I basically had to learn how to sleep all over again. It started happening less and less often after a few weeks, but it took 6 months before it went away completely.
Do you have a data capable machine? If so, you might want to look at your graphs. You might be having a cluster of events waking your up, it could be a major mask leak, or you might be maxing out on pressure (thus having some events). If you have an APAP, it might be the pressure adjusting as you go into a deeper sleep state--some folks are really sensitive to pressure changes. Without data, it might be kind of hard to figure out what is going on.

You do not say if you get back to sleep or not.
If you do, then waking up after a few hours probably does not matter.
I cannot think of a machine instruction that would change anything after a few hours, so I think you can rule that out.
Best to register, including all your machine and mask details, and begin to educate yourself about your machine and your condition.

You are not titrated correctly or there is something completely unrelated going on. Inform your sleep doctor.billcpaphawaii wrote:I use my CPAP every night, however, I wake up after 3 1/2 to 4 hrs every night. I just started using CPAP about one month ago and have experienced same thing, usually after 2 1/2 hours or so. Am wide awake, can't fall asleep for a long time. I did this all the time before using CPAP.billcpaphawaii wrote:I use my CPAP every night, however, I wake up after 3 1/2 to 4 hrs every night. saw doc a couple of weeks ago and commented on this. being post-menopausal female thought it might have something to do with hot flashes--i really don't specifically have flashes but am very warm most of the time.
doc said that this awakening may go away with time. taking over-the-counter herbal products to help with hot flash symptoms, do not want to take HRT and my PCP doesn't recommend it for me anyway.
have been trying to download encore software in order to read SD card but having difficulties with my 64-bit laptop. Would really like to know what is going on while i am using CPAP.

Does anyone think that it might be the sleep cycle? Go thru the first sleep cycle okay, the second sleep cycle is a little deeper - and voila! Apneas and hypopneas start, or become worse or more frequent????

If you are on an APAP, my guess is that you fall into deep REM sleep at about that point and the pressure increases. Particularly if you have a wide pressure range, the increase in pressure can be abrupt enough to wake you.
If you are on CPAP or APAP, the other thing that might be happening is that when you get into that REM sleep you need MORE pressure than your machine puts out, and the events wake you.
I had a complete cessation of my "menopause" symptoms when I first started CPAP, but they came back a month or two later. We looked at the data and found that my pressure was up against the ceiling around that time of night. We increased my pressure by 2 cm, and miracle of miracles, no more "menopause"!
The so-called menopause symptoms were really APNEA. At least men don't have to put up with chalking everything up to menopause. Their doctors must actually listen to their complaints.

During my visit to my sleep center, I asked the RT about waking up with some regularity. She attributed it to a normal circadian rhythm. If I have problems going back to sleep, I just relocate with the machine to another room and turn on the TV or radio and get distracted back to sleep. My wife does nol like added noise in the bedroom.

If your getting up to go to the bathroom, you probably need to be re-titrated
