Mask Issues

Post by trip68 » Fri Oct 22, 2010 10:54 pm

This is my first post and I am sure this may be covered somewhere.

I am usinng the Resmed Mirage Quattro mask.

I have been using the machine for a week, and have seen improvements in my daytime life.
My only problem is the mask. It does great for a few hours, but then several times during the night I have to adjust for leaks.
Seems like my new quality sleep time is now spent adjusting this mask.
I go into the Home Medical office on Tuesday for a consult and I am going to see about a loaner mask to try to see if I like it better.

Has anyone tried the mask that covers the eyes as well ?
Does anyone have a ny recomendations on a full face mask they like ?

Hi - the 'Total' face mask (that also covers the eyes) seems to be noted for a lot more leaks than others and you might be better off trying different masks altogether, whether the Hybrid, Liberty or UltraMirage FF (I wear the latter in an unusual - small shallow - size), or try yours in a different size.

Hi, I use the fitlife mask at times, would like to use it regularly, i really like the mask but I can't seem to get the leaks out of it.It does really good to start with but it always wakes me up leaking.
It's so easy to put on,clips on really quickly, and i'm off to sleep.
I'm still working with it to control leaks.

There are forum members who have had good luck stopping leaks using these.

Hi,

Welcome to the forum, and congrats on getting started with CPAP.

I recall hearing that the UN High Commissioner On Refugees considers the Quattro to be a torture device. At least that is how it turned out for me. I have tried several full face and nasal masks, and they all seem to have the same issue. The rising and falling of pressure when I breathe (made worse by using a BiPAP) leads to abrasions and welts on my face. I end up having to get it so tight to stop leaks that it leaves large red marks. And any air moving or leaking around my eyes drives me nuts. Neither style worked out for me.

I did find that I was able to use a hybrid, but, again, I had to have it so tight that it was not comfortable. I ended up with a nasal pillow mask (Swift LT). I am not a perfect candidate for a nasal pillow mask since I have slightly slotted nares, but I am able to make it work.

All I can suggest is to try different mask types and see what works for you. Every face and every case is different.

I also notice that I can adjust my mask in my sleep without remembering doing it. I don't know if I wake up to do this, or if I am doing it in my sleep. That seemed to be something that I learned to do over the course of about 6 weeks. You might find over time that it isn't bothering you as much to make these adjustments. So much is new to you right now that you are probably a bit more aware of things like this, and a little more prone to having it wake you up.

I have found that using Remzzzs and also a Comfort Care Sleep Pad (really for my nose protection) has cut the leaks down a great deal. The mask seems to now stay in place because its not actually touching my skin.

You might want to do a search here for special cpap bed pillows that have a cutout for your mask.

I also have had issues with mask leakage. I have found in hot weather the hybrid and Liberty work well for me. Now that it is cooler they were both causing sinus issues. I now use the Forma. After a few nights adjusting and readjusting I finally can get mostly a full night of sleep. At first I overtightened the mask which ended causing more leakage and discomfort. After fiddling around a few times (more than a few) I finally got the hang of it. Good luck.

Thank you so much for your ideas.
I go in Tuesday for a follow-up and I am going to look at all the masks they have.

I never really got to "TRY" different masks. I went in for the sleep study and was handed three (3) to try and pick one (1) that was the most comfortable.
After the sleep test which was a week later. I was handed the mask I choose the night of the study.

Looking back, it was kinda rushed to pick out a mask the night of the test. That night was the first time I had a mask on. They basically placed each one on my face and was told to pick the most comfortable. I did not get to toss, turn, yawn, adjust straps, etc.

So I am going in on Tuesday and spend a little time playing with them.
Thanks again. Looking forward to learn with you guys.

UPDATE:
Well I went to the DME and tried on a gell full face, a hybrid, and a fishbowl.
The fishbowl leaked like you would not belive. The Assistant said the mfg. was aware of this and is comming out with a thicker seal next time. It seems like it would have been the best choice if it did not leak due to you can be active in sleep with it.
I then tried the gel full face, leaked as well.
Tried the hyrbid seemed ok at the DME office untill I got it home. It felt like cooled air going through my nose, I am sure it would have dried out my nose. Also it leaked around the nostril area. It looked and felt great at the DME office, but when I got home it was awful.

So I am back to my Resmed Mirage Quattro which now seems like a million bucks compared to the fishbowl and hybrid.
So many flavors for so many people ! What worked for me may not work for someone else...so be sure to try a bunch of masks.
