finding a leak

Post by iphonehome » Mon Oct 18, 2010 10:54 pm

I cannot get my leak rate below 20. The mask seems tight with no leaks even under normal pressures. I have run the tubing under water with no leaks showing. It does not make sense. I cannot find leaks but the machine says there are leaks. Any ideas?

I'm not sure that you have a problem at all.

Respironics machines report leak rates differently than Resmeds. With a Respironics machine you will not get a 0 leak rate. It shows (and reports in data if you have the software) the vent rate for your mask and any leak above that.

You need to look at your mask users guide and find the chart ( graph) that shows the vent rate for your mask at your pressure. This number (and 20 would not be a bad number at all) is reported by Respironics machines as the leak rate plus any other leakage that might be happening. With Respironics machnes you want your leak rate to be as close to that number as possible. A little above or a little below is still acceptable.

Resmed machine show 0 leak rates, Respironics do not.

Your mask is known to be particularly leaky, the reason probably so many people do not use it even though it seems like an easier one to wear. You may not be able to track microleaks all the way around that mask but might be better off trying different ones instead.

My husband uses the same machine as yours and with his UMFF at pressure of 12cms his leak rate should be about 40 lpm so I'm assuming your pressure is set pretty low. Your mask manual should show the vent flow chart. How are you feeling?
