Nose irritation problems

Post by BigBad64 » Fri Oct 15, 2010 11:33 pm

I'm hoping someone out there has had this problem and conquered it.

I've had my Resmed S9 and Mirage Quattro Full-Face mask for a while now and it has improved my sleep out of sight. I've had occasional leak issues but seem to be able to solve them. I ordered 6 x Remzzzs liners which assist with the leaks.

My problem is that the mask where it sits at the top of the nose has broken the skin and it won't heal over. It got infected and I've had a course of anti-biotics re that. This area of the nose is where I've previously had a small "basal cell carcinoma" removed and it is obviously sensitive.

The mask is not overly tight at the top, it just seems that the break in the skin is right where the plastic bladder sits. This in combination with the airflow to the exit vent seems to cause the problem.

I've had the area in Band-Aids for weeks giving the area protection but it won't heal. The Remzzzs also covers it but doesn't seem to have assisted.

At the moment it seems like it's a choice between a good sleep or a healthy nose, and I'm not sure what to do from here.

I'd like to attach a couple of photos of the problem area to demonstrate what I'm talking about but I can't see an "Add Attachment" tab?

Have you tried nose pillows? They do not sit on the bridge of your nose at all.

Click on my "mask" below for an example.

I tried a nasal pillow unit out and found it unsuitable because I couldn't stand the air blowing direct up my nose. That and the fact I'm a mouth breather made a full face mask the only option.

By Googling a bit I can see that a lot of people have had nose sore issues with the Mirage Quattro Full Face Mask.

I have just been looking at the "Mirage Liberty™ Full Face CPAP Mask with Nasal Pillows including Headgear". I see that doesn't have anything that sits on the nose at all.

Does that unit still blow air directIy up the nose at close range?

Thanks Laura for the link I've been looking for something like this and it appears to be easy enough to use, since my computer skills are VERY limited...Again thank you for posting it.

BigBad64, I know someone that has been on a ventilator for 20 years and he swore blind for around 15 years to place sticky back toweling to the edges of the mask and found that was the best way to both combat leaks and also to stop parts of the mask rubbing on areas of the face or nose. The kind you'd get to redo a tennis racket and can be purchased from most sports stores.

I don't know if that might help you but you could give it a try. It sounds a bit overkill but it worked for him for 15 years.

Thanks
Dave

I had similar problems and stopped using the Quattro for a while, substituting Liberty and or Hybrid. But after finding the Pad A Cheek products, I am back to the Quattro. The first miracle product is the Nosebridge Protector -- http://www.padacheek.com/PAC_Nosebridge.html - comfort after the first night. I did get some leakage on the sides, and went back and tried the Mask Liner - http://www.padacheek.com/PAC_Maskliners.html which solved both problems. Good Luck!

I also had major probelms when using my Quattro but they vanished almost overnight once I started using the Comfort Care Sleep Pad.
Might be worth a try.

I wear two layers of J&J clear first aid tape (small pieces) every night to prevent "red nose" from my Quattro. For some reason, J&J works better than 3M.
