Anyone used EMDR to help with CPAP adjustment or know about

Post by adksleepygal » Sat Oct 16, 2010 10:26 am

I am a newbie - struggling with adjustment to CPAP - panic, claustrophobia, etc....
I quit the tx , returned the equipment and now Dr is mad at me. He says I have severe apnea and need this and is suggesting possibly the use of EMDR to help me with the panic from it. I have been unable to sleep with it and cannot relax from having it near me. If anyone does know of this at all or has used this before, please advise. Hmmmm - a tx to adjust to a tx....... Seems awfully complicated to me
Thank you

sleepygal, welcome to the forum, and good for you for being willing to keep trying to succeed at cpap therapy. Many of our forum members have experienced panic when beginning therapy. Sometimes that seems to come from trying to overcome our instinctive dislike of covering our faces (gotta admit, cpap therapy is not natural!) and sometimes it seems to come from problems with pressure and leaks and whatnot. In any case, this CAN be dealt with, and you're very clever to know that needs to happen sooner rather than later. Read all you can on this forum, and ask us anything!

My fiance doesn't have sleep apnea, but he does have PTSD. He's done very well with EMDR to help with his panic and anxiety.

EMDR can work quite well. Some use finger movement, some use a light bar, etc. I disliked the light bar, it wasn't as effective tho certainly more comfortable for the therapist. And that was years ago in EMDR's infancy. I haven't read up on it in years.

I have found EMDR to be helpful. I used it to get to what was keeping me "stuck" at not feeling good with the sleep apnea, and then move beyond my fears into what I want for my health. I am feeling better.

Good luck!

Happy Sleeper
