Prof,

I've got a 420E (just took it to Germany!) and I still get annoyed by the noise. My Remstar Pro is quite a bit quieter. The first thing to note is that the noise you get "through the hose" will be much reduced when you are going through a humidifier. I can't use mine without it even though I don't really need the humidity.

Although it is probably generally bad practice, I have my machine on the floor between the bed and a bedside table and I wedge a pillow over it, making sure not to restrict the air flow in the back or enclose it too much so it gets hot. This helps reduce the external noise for my wife's benefit. I still wear earplugs every night...

I feel like I'm able to give myself a partial sleep-study checkup with the machine and the software, so I have no regrets of buying it. I don't use it every night, but for travel and camping, it's great.

I have been using my 420E for a month+ now and still find it to be somewhat noisy. The inhalation/exhalation shift and consant drone mentioned in several posts. But I wouldn't trade it! Even my wife accepts the trade off from my snoring, which could break gless from a 1/4 mile away.

That up & down whirring noise (uadwn)

some comments from my own experiments ...

1) The ResMed Spirit I used was my fav machine in terms of APAP but my wife was most unhappy with that uadwn

2) The Remstar AUTO w/cflex I have does it too (in AUTO mode) but no where near as noisily I am back to using it because wife can accept its mild uadwn

3) F&P221LE as CPAP, I didn't mind the noise of this machine at all but my wife said she thought it was noisy. To me it was rock solid & no uadwn at all. In fact I could blow back into the mask & the F&P unit didn't waver a fraction

4) ResMed S8 Escape - It seemed ok, it did seem a bit noisier than the F&P & it did a little bit of wavering on exhale but nothing to be worried about

5) ResMed Elite (This is the same mechanical unit as a ResMed Spirit but its software only runs it in CPAP mode). It was quiet as far as I was concerned. In fact I swapped the blower assembly from it into the Spirit in the mistaken belief that this would make the Spirit quieter but it made absolutely *no* difference to either machines (swapping the blower assy). What it indicated to me was that an Elite is quiet & a Spirit does that uadwn and the only difference is the software & the way they are controlled.

All good fun

Well, who knew my oddities were going to come in handy one day? I have no idea how loud my machines and masks are because I sleep with both the ceiling fan on in the room and an additional fan pointed at my face. Started using fans in college dorm rooms to drown out the noise from the hallways and have continued the habit even though college is only a faint memory now, lol. We built our house 13 years ago and the ceiling fan is only turned off for cleaning...has run continuously pretty much for 13 years!

Well, most people thought I was nuts for loving the noise of fans, but it definitely has come in handy now!
