Mirage Ultra Full faced Mask making an aweful wracket!

Post by Palamedes » Thu Sep 30, 2010 4:29 pm

I have the mirage ultra full faced mask, and it whistles! Constantly.. It's coming from the center vents, a high pitched "dog whistle" like sound and its absolutely driving me insane.. It's like a cup of coffee at night I swear.. It wakes me up as soon as it starts happening..

So.. I don't want to cover those vents obviously, and I'm not sure if widening them will screw things up or even solve the issue..

Thoughts? Is this a common problem?

Do you notice it more when you inhale or exhale?

I had a similar problem, and it seemed to be more pronounced when I would exhale. Have not determined the solution as yet - but it *is* interested to see someone else with a similar problem with the same mask.

I use the Ultra Mirage Full Face Mask. My experience when it starts "whistling" is the rubber that the holes are in has come loose. I take the rubber section completely out and reinstall it onto the mask. It is important that the grooves on the rubber are around the plastic of the mask properly. This usually gets rid of the whistling.

Yes, that happened with me once, when I was cleaning the mask I must have dislodged the vent so I took it completely off and carefully reinserted it until it fit snugly in the groove. Also make sure there's no water left in the holes if you've washed and air dried it.

Dori's right - the thing is hard to re-lodge and you need careful fingernails to get it right.

And, if you disassembled it to clean it.........don't.
(it's not necessary and too many people can't get them back together properly)

I bought a slightly used mask, and it made a loud whistling noise. When I checked the specs, I found that a valve was missing. I emailed the seller, and he had left that part by the sink, after washing it and putting it together. He was able to find it, and send it to me, so all was well.

The center rubber is seated correctly.. I have never taken it out, and it whistles the loudest under pressure, so at 4 or 5 its nothing but when it ramps up to 10 or so it makes a constant whistle..

Tonight I took mine apart completely - and re-built it according to the diagram that came with the mask. I plan to try it again in a short time, and hopefully, the problem will be resolved - though in rebuilding it, I could not find any reason for it making the noise it did.

Will report more once I've tried the rebuilt mask.

I'm about to give up on mine.. I simply can't use this mask if its going to continue to whistle..

I'm having a very hard time getting used to the cpap as it is, a mask that makes noise like this isn't going to cut it..

I took mine apart last night and then reassembled it. The problem has gone away. As best I can tell, the seal toward the bottom of the mask was not fitting correctly - and it may have been that the hard plastic 'clip' that holds it in place had been dislodged. Once I carefully reinstalled the soft plastic and then the hard plastic that surrounds it - making certain it was installed correctly and firmly - as soon as I put on the mask, the problem was resolved.

I hope this helps.

Pal, It really sounds like something is not seated properly. It's a fairly quiet mask. Can you have the DME look at it? I've never taken it apart but DHC seems to have done it successfully. Good luck.,
