Would you download your dreams if it were possible?

Post by elena88 » Mon Sep 20, 2010 12:48 pm

All this talk of dreaming and oximeters and heart rates got me to wondering..

We can see graphs of our heart rates while we are sleeping, even dreaming.. we can see our oxygen levels... we can see spikes
of heart rates going up for a few minutes... if this was in REM, was a lion chasing us? ( a spike not related to oxygren level)

So, what if in the future we could download our dreams as a recorded video.... like we download our cpap graphs and oxygren graphs..

Would you watch that instead of tv? Would you be interested in your dreams? What do you think you might see?

Imagine you can download them to your phone, and watch them while you are on a train going to work.....

Well, I don't watch much television. But I'd love to take a curiosity peek at dreams.

To extend elena's line of questions: will people routinely post their dreams on youtube some day?

There have been so many times when I have a weird dream or a funny dream that I wished it could have been recorded. I would abolutely love to be able to record my dreams and be able to watch them back. Who knows, in the future that could happen. I will be first in line to do it..

No, mine would not make any sense. They are a conglomeration of non-senscal exploits. Episodes of fighting dinasaurs, jumping far above the streets while thousands watch, then getting caught in the electrical wires and dropping dead back to earth, fighting the transformers (from the movie), being chased by alligators, dropping thousands of feet into a pit of worms and spiders, caught on a bus full of terrorists and going over a cliff to destruction, getting thrust ouf of a submarine into water a thousand feet deep and trying to get back to the top with sharks chasing me. You get the idea. I've probably been watching too many movies. (or taking too many sleeping pills)

I've had some pretty cool dreams that I'd like a 'record' of. Or sometimes when trying to explain a dream to someone it makes no sense, it'd be nice to just show them. But some dreams I'd like to forget as soon as possible...

I think it would be interesting from a psychological point of view. Since dreams are supposedly the way your brain files things from the day, it might be fun to try to watch and dissect them ('Oh that giant bug represents my mother-in-law' ) It would be fun to play with

Absolutely, because they always include my family (long gone somewhere or other) and/or ex- work places, and I used to love what I did and where.

There was a fantasy story I read decades ago about a man who bought dreams (because he had none of his own) but each one you sold to him also took a piece of your soul ... it wasn't a happy story, but it was a good one.

There is an Andre Norton story too about professional dreamers one could buy time with in order to experience a kind of virtual reality adventure.

If my imagination was as fertile awake as it seems to be sleeping, I could be a very successful writer.

I have some form of the same dreams over and over again. Not very exciting. Anyone else have this with sleep disorders?

Are you saying you have the same dream on different nights or that the same dream repeats during the night? I have had dreams that would turn up again every now and then, especially in childhood, one in particular that I came to understand its symbolism as an adult.

Since I have been dealing with Periodic Limb Movement Disorder, which is characterized by stereotypical rythmic repetitive movements, I have found that when it is acting up, I will also dream the same brief snippet over and over a bazillion times. Sometimes it's a sentence, sometimes a line from a song, sometimes a scene with words. I can wake up and go to bathroom and it will resume when I fall back asleep. Absolutely maddening! I would love to understand how my legs and my dreams get caught in the same pattern. I guess if both disorders originate in the brain... aw, I don't know.

But I'd LOVE to see my more involved dreams played back. Sometimes they're a hoot! I'd probably be the only one who'd enjoy them because if you didn't know how unlikely the characters are in their dream roles, or didn't know the situations in real life that prompted the convoluted dreams, you wouldn't get the humor. Some of your dreams sound quite entertaining. I'd choose Dream TV over any other channel!

Being able to download your dreams what an interesting concept. With some of the dreams I do recall it make you wonder what your mind is up to when you are sleeping.

I experience strong emotions in my dreams. Some of my dreams are excruciatingly ordinary, some are horribly frightening (these tend to repeat many times over the course of days...months...years...) and a few are delightful. In some of the delightful ones the feelings are so lovely that I'd love to watch them again, especially if I could feel those feelings again. The frightening ones, not so much.

You have no idea how many times I've thought of this concept of being able to record dreams. It seems to me that I recently heard of someone (or group) who is actually working on this. (I just Googled "recording dreams" and found a number of links.)

Some of the ones I remember are deeply etched in my memory. Some were prophetic. Some were very mysterious. Some were repeated over the years (Pre-CPAP). And, let's just say that there are many that I wouldn't want to let others see.
