Off topic question about "immediate memory problems"

Post by newyorknative » Fri Sep 17, 2010 1:24 pm

Lately I have been having problems, not with my long term memory or even my short term memory. I call it immediate memory for lack of a better description. I will be talking to someone and forget what I was talking about in mid sentance. Or I will be talking to someone in a restaurant, the waitress will come over and ask if I want more Ice Tea and I will say to the person I am having lunch with, now what was I talking about. I will go to the fridge and forget what I was going there for. I remember having this problem in the past for a few months or 6 months and then my memory went back to normal. Mind you these memory problems do not happen with every conversation nor every trip to the fridge. Any thoughts on this problem.

I've had this problem for years--it comes and goes.
I think it's gotten better A.H. (after hosing)
I no longer have that feeling when I'm driving of, "now, where the heck am I?"
Another thanks to CPAP.

That happens to me all of the time. I need something from a drawer. I open the drawer and can't remember what I was looking for. I have to retrace my steps to remember. I can't remember words in the middle of a sentence. One time I couldn't remember my grandaughter's name. I had to ask a co-worker. This kind of thing happens to me many times a day.

I don't know how old you are, but what you are describing is extremely typical of older adults. It is part of the aging process.

Everyone I know over 40 experiences this on a regular basis. I'm sure it happens to some people even earlier than that without being abnormal.

And if you're anywhere around menopause by a few years (if it's relevant) then it's very normal!

Well. I feel somewhat better after reading some of the responses here. I am a 60 year old man. I would like to hear from more people here regarding their experiences with this.

How is your apnea therapy going? I find that my short term memory (which is what you are describing) varies often correlating fairly closely with my AHI. The brain needs a lot of oxygen to function properly.

I am almost your age, and I've had this condition for a while with worsening regularity. I am 3 weeks into my cpap therapy, and I find the incidences are diminishing in regularity....not gone, and I would expect at my age they won't completely disappear, but any improvement is welcome! I find that my brain fog has cleared up considerably!!

I experience this too. I agree with everyone else who says that it is a common characteristic that tends to get worse as we get older. You and I are close to the same age. I am 56 or 57.

It is time to investigate food supplements if you are not doing so already. Ginkgo, turmeric, cinnamon, ginseng, green tea and mind exercises

One of life's little jokes. After decades of education, experience, and thoughtful observation of the passing scene, you finally figure out how the world works and how you fit into it---and then you can't remember what you've figured out.
