Which mask is the right mask?

Post by tMC » Wed Sep 15, 2010 12:52 pm

How do you know what type of mask is the best to use for you? I am a newbie, only my 5th night on my CPAP. I was given a ResMed Mirage Micro Nasal Mask with my machine. When I am at full pressure (14) I get some leakage around the bridge of the nose. Have worked the last few nights on minimizing the leakage but to no avail.

I have 30 days to decide if this is the right mask for me or not. I just don't know how to decide that. I tried the "which mask is right for you" on cpap.com but it came up with no matches.

I sleep at least two thirds or more of the night on my sides. The rest of the night is on my back. Any advice on finding the right mask?

Thanks,
tMC

You don't have to wait 30 days.....If the mask is not right for you go back and get another...keep that up until you find the right one.

A mask that leaks at full pressure, particualrly if, around the bridge of your nose it goes into your eyes, is NOT the right mask. You need to keep looking and trying masks. Many of us went through EIGHT or more masks to find THE right mask.

If you are primarily a side sleeper and you are able to keep your lips sealed with a nasal mask like the Micro at your full pressure, you might want to consider a nasal pillow mask as those are very comfortable for side sleepers. Properly fit and with a few simple tweaks, nasal pillow masks won't leak into your eyes.

I agree with the previous posters. I went through 7 or 8 masks before I found the one I really like. Mine is a nasal pillow mask. I am strictly a side sleeper and the Swfit LT for Her is my favorite. I also got the new Swift FX which is another nice nasal pillow to try. Lot less invasive masks than the one they gave you/ Try out a bunch!!

Good Luck to you and let us know which one you are going to try next--:)

is it common to have a small mask but medium headgear?

Our facial+head anatomy varies, that's why finding a mask that fits well is such a challenge! I use a small oral cushion & large pillows...the headgear is too big thus my straps all overlap.

The right mask is one that is comfortable (so you'll wear it all the time), doesn't leak, and you get good numbers.

Thanks for all the feedback. I ordered up a new mask the Swift FX (looks like the most comfortable nasal pillow mask). Ordered it yesterday and wasn't expecting it until next week but I got it TODAY! I tried it on and it is so light compared to the mask I have been using. I can't wait to give it a try tonight.
