ONE NIGHT WITHOUT XPAP!!!!

Post by Komodo » Tue Sep 14, 2010 10:01 am

Ever since I started therapy 18 months ago, I have slept EVERY NIGHT hooked up to my hose.

Except for last night!

Last night I stayed in a motel without my Vpap. I didn't think missing only ONE NIGHT on the hose would make that much of a difference.
Boy was I WRONG!!!!!!

I woke up a dozen times for bathroom breaks during the course of the night, something I haven't done since starting therapy. When I finally woke up for the day, I was totally exhusted, and fell back to sleep several times before finally dragging myself out of bed. These are some of the same symptoms I had before starting therapy.

I am totally amazed, that missing only ONE NIGHT would have such a dramatic effect on me.

I'm only posting this story as a warning to the rest of you, if you're going to be sleeping away from home, even for only one night, BRING YOUR XPAP WITH YOU!!!

People think they are "cured" because they are getting therapy but a person with an artificial leg knows that if they take the leg off they can't walk. In the same way people with OSA can't breathe without their xpap.

A little OT since I'm not a cpapper, but it's the same with my asthma. Occasionally when my asthma symptoms seem under control and I am breathing normally, I begin to tell myself I don't need my maintenance meds anymore so I "forget" to take them. Guess what, I did that last night and at 3AM I awoke with a full-blown attack that really scared me, lke the early days, as though I had never taken my meds all those other nights! So I guess I still have asthma? Duh!

I can relate. There have been times where i must have taken off my mask during the night (maybe 4 hours in) and feel great 2 hours later when I wake up. But wear it a full 7 hours the next night and feel like crap in the morning...odd.

Oh you too! Isnt that odd? I dont know why that is. Do you have any theories?

I feel like crap in the morning too when I wear it, and like a million bucks if I dont.. Its gotten so bad, I plan days I need to get important things done
by not wearing the apap the night before....

I wish I knew why that was.. I wonder if the people who never had daytime sleepiness or tiredness as a symptom before cpap all have this problem?

I was going to try something where I wear it for four hours then take it off, and sleep without it for three or four hours.. I have done that a few times, and
it seemed to help a lot.. maybe that would be a solution..

I was on for about a month, and one night I woke up after 4 hours with mask pain (quattro: no size fits me)--tossed it on the floor, and shut off the machine.
Next morning, I felt like something the cat would bury.
I really hate that feeling.
I took my stuff on vacation--no way I was going to leave it behind.

Beat the door down of my sleep specialists and other medical advisors.

My sleep doc is all over it....her office calls me once a week to see how Im doing.. they are wonderful, couldnt ask for a better sleep doctor.
she has had me on four machines in six months.. offers anything to me I want or need.. totally supportive..

Im dropping my oxi graphs off next week.. she doesnt have any patients that fit my profile..

patients who were never tired or sleepy before cpap, then reverse effects on cpap..

I thought I would be like everyone else, and this would be a great therapy for me, but since Im here, and its not, now maybe
I can find some other people like me who figured out what the problem was of why they were worse on cpap.. I feel Im much more
likely to find my answers here.. there are not any underlying medical issues that have been found, as I
have been checked up down and sideways...

Elena, what were the results of your PSG? Do you have UARS (can be very challenging to dial in therapy)?

Elena with a pressure of 8.5 why do you think a bipap might be more suited to you?

If you have flex set for the maximum that is a pressure drop of approximately 3 making your exhale pressure of 5.5. I wouldn't be able to breathe at that pressure. Dropping it even more would seem counterproductive I would think. Did you have an periodic limb movements or restless leg syndrome?

The doctor had me try a bipap, and that was much easier to breath against. I have reactive airway disease, Im a shallow breather, and
my favorite pressure is four..

I just bought this apap though, so buying another machine right now would be tough..

I have RLS with NO periodic leg movements.. Maybe Im just a light sleeper..

my sleep study is in my signature, and the play by play is on the sleep lab humor thread.. It was sort of a weird night..

Well the only thing i can think is that the body had gotten used to O2 deficit for so long that it takes time to adjust to "normal" 02 levels throughout the night. (i'm only about a month and a half into cpap therapy).

But I did hve serious daytime sleepiness prior to OSA diagnosis (i coudl have easily fell asleep at a red light).

But just this morning I found my slef waking around 5am to my mask off and on the floor. Put it back on for the remainder of the moring and feel great. It will be interesting to check the data for last night and see how long i actually wore it.
