Are there Heroes among us?
Are there Heroes among us?
Heroes come in many different forms from firefighters or police to teachers and soldiers. I wonder how many of us here in this forum have talked to someone about their experience with CPAP and Sleep Apnea in such a way that it convinced that person to seek medical advice and help about their own sleep issues. I wonder who may have saved a life and doesnt even know it, or maybe they do know. If you have convinced anyone to get a sleep study and they were determined to have OSA or SOSA and subsequently started CPAP then you in my book are a hero. You may very well have saved a life. Or did someone help convince you to seek help? Please tell your story. Dave

There is one hero here for sure. I won't mention any names but you know who you are. Thank you for being my friend.

Re: Are there Heroes among us?
I don't know if I have helped any for sure, but I have found out there are sure a lot of stubborn people out there. I know of several that I am almost sure that have SA but refuse to admit it and won't talk to there doctor about a sleep study. All I get is "I am not going to wear that DA*M mask"!!!! Still working on them but not sure if there is any hope.

A co-worker
My older brother (he was going but was scared, all 6'2" and 325 pounds of cop)
My other older brother
I have planted the seed of a sleep study on many. I am part of a retreat ministry where we sleep up to 20 to a room. We normally have snoring and nonsnoring rooms but some guys don't admit they DO snore. I will lay for hours listening to their breathing patterns and then talk to them the next day.....also banish them to the snoring room the next night

Re: Are there Heroes among us?
My son-in-law went for a sleep study after my daughter kept complaining about him snoring, and being the good mom I am kept telling her that there was a "cure" to all the noise!!
She says that her sleep has improved a great deal since his diagnosis and treatment.

probably not a hero - contractor who was doing the deck - found out he was non-compliant - said exhale problems and more - hated bulky mask - he knew the consequences - told him modern machines have exhale relief and showed him the Swift FX - doubt I made a difference - let him bring it up again but he didn't - his disposition sure showed he had some problems and I bet cpap would help (but not sure cpap would help his totally inept math skills including inability to even get division right with a calculator)

Jules, you should have worked out a barter system where you tutor him in math and help him with his CPAP needs, and he builds you a deck!jules wrote:probably not a hero - contractor who was doing the deck - found out he was non-compliant - said exhale problems and more - hated bulky mask - he knew the consequences - told him modern machines have exhale relief and showed him the Swift FX - doubt I made a difference - let him bring it up again but he didn't - his disposition sure showed he had some problems and I bet cpap would help (but not sure cpap would help his totally inept math skills including inability to even get division right with a calculator)

You are all my heroes. In contrast to the usual order in which things are done, by the time I was diagnosed with OSA, I had already failed to tolerate CPAP therapy, at lower pressures than I was prescribed. So I was pretty anxious about how I was going to treat my disorder. The one thought that allayed my fears was that you people would help me. So you're my heroes.

Re: Are there Heroes among us?
I've convinced some folks to get the test (and they all came back positive and are all on xPAP currently).
A cousin-in-law, mother-in-law, and a coworker.
I convinced my brother ( a physician) to get the sleep study, which came back in the "mild" range, but I' suspect that he has a more severe case, and would greatly benefit from xPAP therapy.
I've also talked with folks (like a woman I sat next to on a commercial flight) who promised to see their respective docs, but I'll never know the outcome.
I have other friends, acquaintances, and and relatives who do not get the significance of the health consequences of the untreated disorder, or they do not think their case is bad enough to warrant dx or treatment (I was one of the latter). These people all remain among my "projects", but I wait for just the right (tactful and non-threatening) moment to nudge and remind.
I do take a small measure of pride in my helping (or trying to help) these folks. "Hero" is a term, however, that overstates our good work. (I reserve the application of this special term for those who wear the uniform in time of war, such as those who currently serve our behalf.)

I understand what you are saying. When I came home from Iraq people called me "hero" and I had trouble with that. I was doing what I said I would do when I raised my right hand. But I think a hero can come in many forms and why should this be any different? If you save a life then in my book you're a hero. Does being a soldier and taking a life make one a hero, even in the defense of his country?
I talked to my mom about OSA and it's effects and she went for a sleep study and now she is on CPAP. My brother was on the hose before me but he has compliance issues so I try to nudge him along by reminding him of the consequences of non compliance in the long run. Did doing this save a life? I have no way of knowing but it was the right thing to do for sure. Does it make me a hero? I don't know, I already have a certain way of looking at that word. Like I said before, I think heroes come in many different forms and walks of life so why not people here as well?
