How accurate is the AHI info and leakrate ?

Post by babon87 » Wed Aug 25, 2010 10:27 am

Fairly new to the group and to CPAP using (less than 2 weeks), I have a Phillips Remstar pro CFlex+ that has data capabilities and was curiuos to know what is the accuracy of the machine in detecting AHI and Leak rate and coming up with data . Also what should be a normal AHI in one night and leakage reate ? I realize that probaly this varies from person to person
thnx in advance

This is a good question. Also, what leakage level is accepted as "acceptable"?

The accuracy of the data on the LCD screen is not that reliable.

To get more reliable and more detailed data (what and when events happened) you need the software Encore Viewer 2.0. It is available from cpap.com for $99. It will read the information on the SD card in your cpap machine and post it to your computer. Any memory card reader will read it if you have the software loaded on your computer. This data is much more accurate than the screen display.

An AHI under 5 indicates good therapy.

An acceptable leak rate depends on your pressure setting and the vent rate for your particular mask at that pressure.

You need to look in the mask manual and find the chart/graph that shows the acceptable leak rate that your machine will deal with at that pressure. You want the leak rate to be at or a little below or a little (just a bit) higher than that number. If it is a lot higher - like 5+ over, you are having mask leaks or you are mouth breathing (if you are not using a full face mask, chin strap or taping). You AHI and other data ( if you have software) will not be accurate if the leak rate is too high. It's important to get all leaks under control to get good therapy.
