Nasal Pillow Rainout

Post by Dantebenuto » Mon Aug 23, 2010 11:07 pm

3 year vet and recent devotee to the S9 APAP here. I read quite a bit back into the posts but couldn't find much on this topic... a little but not much...

I have the humidifier for the S9 but haven't been using it. Why? Nasal pillow rainout. My tube is dry as a bone... but with or without humidity, moisture gathers in the Swift II's pillows themselves - this moisture causes leakage deep in the night. Not sure if it's moisture from me exhaling through my nose or what, but it is a nightly issue and is waking me up 5-7 times a night after about 4 hours of sleep. (That's still better than 70 per hour... but jeez.) I was thinking of finding a way to fasten a couple of grains of rice in the pillow to absorb moisture, kind of like you might do in a salt shaker. Has anyone ever tried or thought of trying that?

Plus, if it works, I can eventually make a small meal for myself if I save up the soaked grains.

At least you've got a sense of humor about it. Wouldn't want that rice to be force-fed into your lungs and start a rice paddy down there. (Saw on news this week someone had a pea sprouted in their lung.) Have you tried a hose cover yet? Sitting the machine lower than your bed? Using the humidifer in passover mode (in place but not turned up)? A combination of these things stopped my rainout.

Here's a suggestion to use a length of string inside nasal pillows to wick up rainout.

Saw that about the pea, too... HAH!

I use a hose cover (moisture isn't forming in hose... its in the pillows... ugh.)... also have machine positioned below bed level, but have not used humidifier in passover mode... what does that do? Grrr... back to the research...

I know the original poster said the nasal pillow rainout caused leaks. On mine, I get moisture only sometimes - and it is accompanied by leaks. So I figured the leaking caused the rainout in the pillows, since escaping air there would cool the pillows more than normal.

But maybe I have it backwards, but I only get moist pillows sometimes, and it doesn't seem related to changes in ambient conditions.

I have heard about rainout but I have never had that problem.I have my machine on a old folding tv table and I sleep on a kingsize water bed, which is pretty high,so the table is lower than the bed.
