Method to prevent sleeping on back w/o a shirt?

Post by davecpap » Thu Aug 19, 2010 11:12 am

I need to stop sleeping on my back (seems to cause me the most problems), but I like sleeping without a shirt. So far the only suggestions I've come across are the Pajama Pillow (a shirt), the Zzoma (FAQ says works best with a shirt), and the old tennis ball in the shirt trick.

So far the most promising solution is the Zzoma and ignore the shirt recommendation. I'm thinking something belt-like that can be worn around the waist would be ideal. Any ideas?

Make a strap to fit around your chest, put a foam pad in the backside, put large tack into the pad point side in. Should provide the needed motivation. A simpler fix get a Bra put it on backwards, fill the cups with foam and use two large tacks inserted point side in. Jim

I made a homemade tennis ball setup to discourage myself from back sleeping. I cut a hole in the bottom of a tube sock, guided an old belt through the sock, put in two tennis balls, and secured the tennis balls in place with three rubber bands. I wore it wrapped around my upper body, just under my armpits, with the tennis balls on my upper back. You could try that, or a backpack filled with something that will keep you on your side. It may not work very well wearing this around your waist because it would fit into the small of your back. Effectiveness may also depend on how soft your mattress is.

DreamOn,
Very creative - and unobtrusive! I'm interested in trying that myself (Not that I would ever sleep without a shirt )

Invest in a good sidesleeper mattress.

Roster,

That IS the funniest thing! Thanks, I needed a good laugh.

Todd

PS - why is that these folks don't want to sleep on their backs? Does it exacerbate the apnea condition?

My husband has AHI = 39 on his back..
It averages 4.5 in all other positions.
IF,( and I stress the 'if'') he could stay off his back, he would have no need for CPAP.
However arthritis. . .
--He gets a lot of pain staying in one position.
