My Machine Died

Post by ka-ann » Wed Aug 18, 2010 4:58 am

Help! I used my cpap on Monday night and it was fine. When I put it on last night (Tuesday) it had no power. I checked the cord and looked it over completely and it is just without power. The display is not lit. The buttons do nothing. I have checked everything. Nothing happened to it and it has not had any problems. Is there a reset or something? I am so tired this morning from not being able to get a good night's sleep. Wow! What a difference! My machine was bought new at the end of January so it isn't old. I am at a loss!
Thanks
Karen

Both are good ideas.

Do you have cats?

My gf granddaughter has a cat that has ruined 2 power cords for her laptop. Just tiny holes piercing the wires that are hard to see.
Just a thought.

Good Luck

If you got it from a DME, you should be able to get it fixed or replaced. I would give them a call or take it right in. I think that is too early for a machine to die on you and I would think these machines last at least a good 5 years or more for the price that they coast. If you got it from a local DME then you should have recieved paper work and I beleive ther should ne a warranty on it too. Soo look through you paper work if you have any and look for the warranty. It still should be under warranty. I just looked at the manul for the warranty and mine is under warranty for 2 years. So check your manual I have the S8 Escape II the basic machine. so yours still should be under warranty. My humidifyer is warranted for 1 year and the mask and it's parts are warranted for 90 days. Sooo check the warranty on your machine and I'm sure it is still under warranty so get it fixed or replaced. Good luck with every thing. Huggies, Fay

Unlike laptops, Respironics xPAPs and the ResMed S9s, the S8s do not have a power "brick". The power cord carries 120 V AC. So if kitty bit the wire, he probably bit something else, too.

BTW, the ResMed S8s use a standard 2-wire power cord, the same as the ones used on many other electronic devices. For example, when I accidentally left my power cord at my parents' house, I was able to substitute the cord from my Canon inkjet printer. I believe that Radio Shack has the cord, too.

If you are stuck at a hotel without a power cord, you can usually find one in the hotel lost and found box -- ask at the front desk, or possibly the bell captain.

Have you ever noticed if the dog or cat chew an electrical cord they don't seem to get shocked but go by an pick up the pieces without unpluging and you get the day lights shocked out of you.

just an observation

It would be nice if ka-ann got back into the conversation and let us know what she found out about what caused her cpap to
lose power.

Thank you so much for all the responses!! You all are the greatest!!
Well, I did call my DME and left a message. You can never talk to a real person (I hate that). They have to call you back. They did not ever call me back today!! So I came home from work and decided to take a look for bites (dog - not kitties) and check it over one more time. No bites at all (good dog)! It was still not getting any power so I unplugged everything and just basically looked it over. Flipped it this way and that, pressed the buttons over and over. I plugged it back in and it began to work again. My husband and I worked with it for an hour last night with great frustration trying to get it to work. We don't know why it decided to work now. I hope it works tonight. I am addicted to that thing!! You don't realize how much it helps till you don't have it! Thanks again for all the comments. Hopefully it was just a one time occurrence!!
Sweet dreams!
Karen

Even if it is working, if and when the DME calls you back tell them it still needs checked out. Better to be safe than sorry and I would worry about it doing it again.

The comments are all correct:
1. Ensure that the outlet is supplying power - power outlets do have issues from time to time and become intermittent. Try plugging in a lamp to the same outlet to see if the light flickers AND try plugging the CPAP into another outlet completely that you know is indeed working.
2. The connection that the power cord makes to the CPAP can become compromised as well; the power cord needs to make solid contact with the prongs on the inside of the power receptacle in the CPAP machine and power cords do become compromised.
3. If I am not mistaken the ResMed units have a fuse internally and fuses also become compromised and wiggling and wobbling can cause a 'dud' fuse to come back to life temporarily.
4. The older ResMed units have internal power supplies and electromechanical blowers run by electronics that can suffer a "glitch" for no apparent reason.. THIS I would want to have checked out thoroughly and get on record as having reported the failure as of THIS date should it fail again in future. Asides from which we don't want the darned thing melting down during the night and blowing acrid smoke. All the more reason to insist on the unit being checked out thouroughly with the appropriate paperwork being presented to you on its return - or if it is only months old perhaps try to insist on it being replaced rather than played with.

The bottom line is that for every fault there is a cause of some sort and one needs to determine the probable cause of the fault for peace of mind. It could be as simple as a loose power cord with widened prongs from sideways pressures, or as serious as an electronics issue internally. In either case you want it checked out by an authorized ResMed dealer and you want the paperwork to show that it has been checked out.

Just my two cents worth. sorry.
