mask replacement?

Post by Marke » Sat Jul 31, 2010 6:27 am

Just a question,
been using the same mask for 4 months now.
Does the seal wear out and loose effectiveness
I have a new replacement and haven't started using it but I feel
I may tonight as I seem to be having more leaking issues and more awakenings
through the night, hence feeling tired again.
Should I replace mask every 90 days as prescribed
any thoughts on others and how much life they get out of their masks
thanks,
Marke

I've used the Liberty for over a year now. The silicone does tend to wear out in a way that causes more leaks over time. I've noticed lately that the nasal pillows especially are wearing out much more quickly (like in one month) than they ever did when I started. The mask I'm using now needs the silicone mouthpiece replaced and it's been about six months since I started using it.

I've been using the VERY SAME mask for over five YEARS and it's still giving me a good seal. I did have to replace the headgear early last year (got about four years out of that), but the mask shows no signs of deteriorating.
Don't get me wrong, I have several backup masks (same model) and a number of extra seals and sets of headgear on top of that, but my first/main one is still going strong. Actually, it seems to get better with age.

If your mask utilizes nasal pillows, I understand that they will wear out sooner.

Edit: What type of bed pillow are you using? That will, by far, have more effects on your leaks than the type of mask (including mask wear) you use.

Den, I suspect you've got an oldie but goodie. And as they say...they don't make 'em like they used to. Even in one short year I've seen a change. Consider yourself lucky!

I do. Over the years I keep reading about people changing their masks or seals every few months, so I've been determined to do a durability test with my original to see just how long it WILL last. Other than a relatively few months trying to break in another UMFF and trying the Quattro, this mask is the one I started with. It's like the "Energizer Bunny".

I would LOVE it if someone would do a laboratory test, comparing durability of cushions and nasal pillows; published in a spreadsheet for all to see--Especially the manufacturers, who I strongly believe could do a LOT better!
