New prescription seems to be working

Post by AndrewB » Thu Jul 01, 2010 8:30 am

Last night was my first night on my updated pressure prescription (the Dr called me yesterday with the change). I went from 8cm to 11. My AHI went from a usual 40ish number to 11.4

Looking at the data - most of the events co-incided with some bad leaks which I managed to fix around 5:00am After that there were only a couple of obstructive events and now that there's not the forest of obstructive events I can see the occasional rare central event.

Looks like I'm on my way!

sorry! my English was a bit whack in my previous reply. The true indication of whether its better for you depends on how you feel...

Great news. Hope your feeling better with the change in pressure. AHI of 10 is still a bit high, the goal is under 5.

With it being a holiday here in Canada today I also got a lot of hours of sleep so I felt pretty good waking up. I had some chest pain the same as I had when I first started on CPAP probably due to the increased pressure.

I'm going to take more care with fitting my mask tonight so hopefully my leaks will decrease and I'll have even better numbers tomorrow.

Jim,

Lets hope that with the leaks under control, that number drops to less than 10. Then give Andrew a few days to adjust, and then we can see where it is at. This is a huge step in the right direction, but I think he needs about a week to 10 days to see if it will trend down or if it says high.

Yes I fully agree, I should have included it. Hopefully Andrew will keep everyone updated with his progress.

Thanks

You betcha. Last night I had an AHI of 20 but few leaks - but I also had a couple of beer before bed (Canada Day eh!)

I "feel" a lot better today too.

Good news your feeling better.

As you probably already know, alcohol can make your AHI a bit worse. The goal is to have an AHI under 5, but it's not always possible.
If after a week your AHI is still a little high you might try bumping up your pressure slightly see if it helps. Then track your progress for another week before making changes.

It's not real unusual for the pressure from a sleep study to need a bit of tweaking, it is a one night snapshot.

I had two sleep studies, both times the results recommend a pressure setting of 12. At a pressure of 12 I did not feel any better. Then I purchased out of pocket an Auto CPAP and software. My first night using the auto, I set the minimum pressure to 13 1/2. The next morning I woke up feeling refreshed for the first time in 20 years, I was dreaming, it was wonderful. After a little tweaking, I felt best with a setting of 15 to 17 1/2. An auto can bump my minimum pressure of 15 up to my maximum setting of 17.5 when additional pressure is needed. You probably already have a basic understanding of how an auto CPAP works.

Unfortunately for me I did not sleep very well during either sleep study which resulted in my prescribed pressure being to low.

Good luck, keep your progress reports coming. Hope you continue feeling better.

Looks like things are going in the right direction.

It is still early to tell and another few days will tell us more. Hope you are continuing to feel better too!
