CPAP use when flying

Post by harry33 » Wed Jun 16, 2010 3:19 pm

some airlines are CPAP friendly, some arent so check first. some airlines will give you a cheap seat with a powerpoint, some will only provide a more expensive seat with a powerpoint. some will allow you to use a cheap seat and take along your own battery

each airline has a 'special handling' dept, often accesable via the net only, you have to download and print out their special CPAP use forms which sometimes have to be faxed back to them, your make and model CPAP must be on their approved list, and so must your battery, assuming they allow battery use

you need to buy your ticket first, then provide the details to 'special handling', so do allow plenty of time.

some apnea passengers simply take along their CPAP and plug it into any nearby powerpoint, without permission this is risky as the powerpoint may be designed for laptops and not suitable, and your CPAP may be confiscated for the flight since things were not arranged in advance

you will sometimes be called to board early so a technical person can plug in your CPAP and make sure it works OK

do you really need a CPAP? most of snore less when sitting up

Well, I don't snore and others don't as well...so that's not really an issue for some of us. Since I don't sleep deeply or well when flying, I didn't bother to try to use my xPAP when I flew overnight a few weeks ago. For me, that's really the main issue. It wouldn't be useful for me, so why complicate things?
