I put MY fitlife mask on my husband yesterday...
I put MY fitlife mask on my husband yesterday...
So, I put my fitlife mask on my husband yesterday, he was so tired, and sleeping in his chair..
I told him it was time for a nap IN THE BED.. and why not try out my fitlife mask???
(husband is not on cpap, but has two consults for sleep studies, he refuses to go, plus had a heart attack last year)
Anyway, I get him all comfy wumfy, strap the mask on him, and off he goes into dreamland in about sixty seconds..
(I think he has a touch of narcolpsy or something!)
Anyway, I watched the machine ramp up to 10.1 from seven, and I noticed him also stop breathing here and there.. and the mask
began to pulsate to increase the pressure.. He woke up after about ten minutes or so.. said he couldnt take the pressure..
(Of course hes a babe in the woods, so of course it probably bugged him)
I couldnt wait to see the AHI.. and it said.. 0.0 OF course, because its only an average per hour!
He didnt sleep an hour.. i was so disappointed..
Then later that night, I decided to sleep with my nose pillows, and put the machine on. I had to change the pressure settings, and the mask
settings.. then I tried to go to sleep.. I couldnt.. I laid there for an hour awake.. and decided to turn the machine off. OH, then I thought
to check the AHI average.. guess what?????? It read 15.1 !!!
Now how can that be? I never fell asleep... so could those of been all from MY Husband while he was sleeping for those few minutes?
OR did something happen when I changed the mask settings, and pressure settings?
Its interesting that when I did go to sleep eventually, the number went down from 15.1 in the middle of the night to 7, then by the time I woke
up it was down to 2.2 (my average is usually in the threes or twos.) I wonder if that means we can have a large number of events
in the beginning of the night, then no more after the pressure ramps up, and the average goes lower and lower the longer we sleep?
So what do you all think?
How did that 15.1 get on there after the machine was on only for an hour?
Is it possible to have a series of events all at once, and then the longer we sleep they average out to a lower number?

I use an S8 Autoset II--the one before the S9--and I have noticed this mostly after taking naps (which happens rarely and only on the weekend). Sometimes I don't fully fall asleep for naps, and I think it's recording false apneas while you are tossing and turning and getting settled. That's my guess anyway. The naps where I do really fall asleep, my AHI is normal (~1-2.5).
That's my guess anyway.
That's my guess anyway.

Re: I put MY fitlife mask on my husband yesterday...
thanks for the reply!
That would make sense, however, I watched him the whole time, he didnt move, he was perfectly still accept for his breathing..
so Im still confused.. did he have a bunch of hyponeas or apneas? It looked like he did, because the machine kept pulsing up when
he quit breathing, but I thought, thats a lot of them for ten minutes!
I so wish he would get a sleep test.

Re: I put MY fitlife mask on my husband yesterday...
Do you have an oximeter? In one night (at home) you can see what happens to his O2 levels. If his breathing is stopping for any length of time his O2 will dive into the 80's or even less. At about $125, I think an oximeter is invaluable to get some idea of what is happening.

If you can download detailed report data, you should be able to see when the AHIs occurred, at what pressure, and what other related events may have occurred. No software?

Re: I put MY fitlife mask on my husband yesterday...
hi thanks!
he was sent hom with an oximeter once, and it got down to the eighties, Im thinking of buying one.
Oh yes, I could download the data and see what happened, easy to remember it was on the holiday..
IF he did have that many, Im going to drag him kicking and screaming to have a sleep test, if he wont do it, maybe I can get him
tested at home..

My guess is that AHI=15 was from you when you weren't sleeping. I tend to have a lot of "events" while awake, and if that's all that's recorded, it really skews the data. Imagine if you have 5 "events" in 30 minutes while awake, and then turn the machine off. That's going to translate into an AHI of 10. But if you'd kept it on all night, those 5 "events" would be washed out over 8 hours of sleep, leading to a much lower AHI.

Re: I put MY fitlife mask on my husband yesterday...
OH THANK YOU SO MUCH!
okay, so thats how the events get washed out..
I know I have lots of events while awake because that is why the pressure pulses on the system one drove me nuts, and I had to
give that machine back..
Well that all makes sense..
I wish the machines "knew" when you were sleeping..
I dont know if I misunderstood my sleep doctor, but when they gave me an auto to do an at home titration test.. I asked her if it KNEW when
I was sleeping, or they could figure out the data from that because I didnt sleep much with it, and she said they could tell the difference when
they did the download.. Of course I had no idea what she was talking about back then.

Re: I put MY fitlife mask on my husband yesterday...
Elena,
Did you remember to change mask settings when you put it on your husband? I think that the Resmed is really sensitive to that--you need to have it on the right setting to get correct readings (don't have a Resmed, that's just what I've heard). So maybe it was showing you his AHI, but it may or not be accurate if you didn't adjust for the correct mask.
It would help if you could look at the data via software because then you can see more detailed data for the time he had it on.

Re: I put MY fitlife mask on my husband yesterday...
hi there!
did I change the mask settings?
yes, I did, and the pressure settings too, cuz that fitlife is a monster for sucking up pressure.. you would suffocate on four or five with
that baby...
My goal is to:
a. download the data..
b. get him to sleep with it for an hour! Maybe I can ply him with a few beers and take advantage of him..
I mean, put my apap on him!
Or maybe I can promise him the moon, if he lets me put it on him..
Last time I did this before, he said.. " I know why you are doing this.. I know you used to dress up your cats, and this is just like that for you!"
HE WAS RIGHT!
IT IS AS MUCH FUN! (but maybe this will make him feel better too!)

Each time I see you post something I take the time to read it because I know I will laugh a lot
Thanks for the humor you put in your histories it's really refreshing in our world of machines, masks, pressure, complaints, bla bla bla. Thanks and I wish you to be able to convince your husband to go make check his problem. If he had a hard attack it could may be related to an OSA condition I'm sure you know that.
All the best!
Rosie

Re: I put MY fitlife mask on my husband yesterday...
howdy there Rosie!
IM going to get this apap on him on way or another, even if I have to handcuff (is there an OMG icon?) to the bed!
My guess is that AHI=15 was from you when you weren't sleeping. I tend to have a lot of "events" while awake, and if that's all that's recorded, it really skews the data. I did an experiment last night, and checked my waking AHI on the s9 after an hour, and my average was 0.8....
so now Im wondering if that 15.1 was REALLY FROM MY HUSBAND???
He said he WILL NEVER GO IN FOR A SLEEP STUDY..
