I just had my sleep study two nights ago and I called today for the results. I was told that I slept 6.7 hours of the 8.5 hours giving me a sleep amount of 82%. I was told that a likely don't have sleep apnea and I should sleep on my back to control the problem. I will be able to talk with a Doctor at the sleep clinic in a few days but in the mean time, is 82% too much to get on cpap? I am always in a fog, tired, low on energy... could the night of the study actually been a bit better than most nights? Please let me know your thoughts? Thank you,
Jerry K

Re: Sleep Results Question, 82% Sleep
The fact that you slept 82% of the night tells nothing about HOW that sleep was. It doesn't matter how long you slept, as far as whether you have sleep apnea or not. What matters is what went on during that time. Did you have apneas -how many- obstructive or central, hypopneas - how many. Was there snoring? Did you stop and start breathing? What were your oxygen levels?
The tech may be going on some of this information when he/she told you that you likely don't have apnea. You were actually told to sleep on your back to deal with it?????? For many people, sleeping on their back CAUSES events.
I would sure want more information than that!
You should ask the doctor at the sleep clinic all that when you see him/her.
You should also ask for a COMPLETE copy of your sleep study results.

Re: Sleep Results Question, 82% Sleep
It seems strange to me that the tech would give you such information at all since that would be giving you a diagnosis and treatment plan(sleep on your back???), which is usually left to the Dr. I couldn't pry anything out of our tech and believe me I tried! Do as much reading as you can here before you see the Dr. Good luck.

Re: Sleep Results Question, 82% Sleep
I'm a sleep tech. The previous posts are 100% right. The important stat's you need to find out are RDI or AHI, both similar. If it is over 5, you will probably qualify for a CPAP study. From your symptoms, it sounds like you are a good candidate. Keep us posted and do a little surfing on this site...it's great!

Re: Sleep Results Question, 82% Sleep
geez louise,
told to sleep on your back? That is usually the worst position to sleep in for apna related events!
Start reading here, be ready when you meet the doctor....
Have him/her explain everything to you... if you dont understand a term, ask.. take a pad and paper, or a friend/spouse with you..
Read the definitions of sleep studys here, and familiarize yourself with all the terminology..
write down a quick list of problems you have had with your sleep, or day time sleepiness, and tell the doctor you have a list you would
like to go over with them, so they KNOW you have questions to ask..
It concerns me that the tech told you to sleep on your back. Normally they are not supposed to say anything to you, except have a nice day..
Mine told me I will get the "results of my test from my doctor" and I did..
I have also read, some people will have two negative tests at a sleep study, and the third time test severe! ANYTHING is possible, if the results
dont match up with how you feel.. keep pushing for answers..
good luck, and research those sleep study terms.. and study some actual graphs and tests so youll be informed.
