Fisher&Paykel HC254JHU OR Res-Med S-8 Autoset II

Hi All

Between these two models, which is the better one in your opinion :
Fisher&Paykel HC254JHU Auto CPAP with the SensAwake feature
OR
Res-Med S-8 Autoset II.

What I have told is -
The former has a USB compatible compliance “stick” and stays in the machine until a download is needed. The SensAwake feature drops the pressure to 4cmH2O when it senses you are awake. Basically you will never feel more than 4cmH20 when you are awake. The Res-med has a compliance card that is inserted the day you are going to download the data. It does not stay in the machine and requires a special card reader that is also USB compatible but is only available from Res-Med. I guess the special card reader will add up to the cost.

I am doing my own research and have very limited options. Both the machines carry 2 yr warranty. Can somebody guide me ?! thanks !

Both of these are what my insurance will cover along with the devilbiss itellipap. I am interested in the response also! Which one are you leaning towards?

Honestly, I don't know which one is better. But, there are many experienced folks here and let's wait for their response.
The F&P has a USB compatible compliance “stick” and stays in the machine until a download is needed. Does that mean we don't need to buy the proprietary res-med card reader and save ??? dollars.

I don't know if there are many people who have used both machines, and can give you a comparison between the two.

I would suggest going to cpap.com, and reading the reviews for each machine, and printing out the specs and comparing them side-by-side.

I used the S8 for 6 months, (before I upgraded to the S9), and can tell you that is a sturdy and reliable machine. You do need a ResMed card reader to be able to download the data from the card, and it may take some searching around for that, as it's no longer available in the US. An Australian firm sells it. On the other had, the lcd screen on the S8 is very good, and you can get daily, weekly or monthly data on: leak rate, AHI, AI, HI, and your 95 percentile if using apap. It also has a mask fitting feature, and leak alarm, which are good to have.

I don't know what you can see on the lcd screen for the Fisher + Paykel. Nor do I know the available of software, or if a card reader is necessary. I would suggest going to their website, for detailed information on that.

I started on the Resmed S8 cpap for a few months... It was ok, I ramped up and had to fight to exhale once in a while...
I had my follow up and showed why I needed an apap instead. my dr switched to a different dme for me and I got the HC254.
I have been using that one for probably 9 months now give or take... as far as machines go, its great. It has the sense awake feature, and I have never had to fight for a breath in or out... THe software is out there if needed... It can be purchased from over the pond somewhere, but other members on here may have it available for personal use if needed... the screen can be set (using the software) to display or hide certain features including ahi, total hours, leak rate and average hours per night. Some time back a fellow user (pugsy) did post up some of the graphs from my machine for me...
I think the sense awake is a great feature. Even when I first turn the machine on at night, it is never hard to get a breath in or out...Hope this helps.

If I were choosing I'd go with the Devilbiss intellipap. It has a 3 year warranty; is quiet and doesn't require the additional cost of the software.

The s8 escape auto...is nothing fancy. A basic cpap with an auto-motor.


The downside to the F&P auto, is that if you go back to a fixed cpap pressure there is not a ramp.
