heya,
just thought i say hi,
i'm new here,
i have problems sleeping, but dunno why, been to the doctor's but he just told me its coz i'm not doing enough during the day and couldnt get me out of his room quick enough,
when i go to bed at night it takes me hours to get to sleep and when i do i end up waking up 3 or 4 times and during the day i'm very sleepy and tend to nearly fall sleep as my head gets all heavy and my head at times seems to give way, and at times i could be laying in bed tryign to get to sleep and my whole body jumps off the bed and when i wake up i cant move for the first 5mins so i tend to lay there for 10-15mins till i'm fully awake before tryign to get out of bed, and when i'm on trains or coaches travelling and someone is sitting next to me and i'm looking out the window and i tend to fall asleep and when i do i get woken up within a second and my body jumps and my leg seems to kick out and kick the poor person next to me only been feeling like this for the last 5/6 years but before that i could get to sleep within a hour and sleep through the whole time and had a good memory but now i'm forget full, and it gets me into trouble when i forgot where i'm supposed to be and turn up late,
can anyone help me?
sorry for my bad spelling but i have trouble with my reading and writting

Welcome aboard.
We don't get many folks from Essex (actually not too many from UK generally).
You have picked a great place to ask questions & get reasonable answers.
Don't worry about your spelling, you have come to a country that practises odd spelling as an art form
My 1st comments are that your symptoms are very interesting - esp the dropping off then experiencing muscle spasms when you wake.
You may well have SA/OSA the sleepiness fits the bill.
Lets wait & see if anyone has comments re the spasms.
Cheers

Hi, Mand, and welcome.
My first reaction was that of OSA and also PLMD (Periodic Limb Movement Disorder), which is a lot like RLS (Restless Leg Syndrome). I am going to provide a link for you to read up on it http://www.sleepscene.com/plmd.htm. Although I am not a doctor, this seemed to be possible given the fact that you feel like you're jumping off the bed involuntarily. The same would happen to me before CPAP therapy right was I was about to doze off and it was like my body had slipped on a freshly waxed floor and I would jerk and wake up.
When I had my sleep study done, although my AHI (apnea/hypopnea index) was low, and considered actually in the high-normal range, my PLMD's were at 14+ per hour. As it was explained to me, it is also another cause for the brain to be disturbed from its sleep which contributes to daytime sleepiness and all the other "wonderful" things that go along with it.
However, you are experiencing muscle pains and other symptoms as well. So I would definitely have a full physical and also a PSG (polysomnograph) http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency ... 003932.htm performed to see if you truly do have a, if not multiple, diagnosable/treatable sleep disorder.
I'm sure others who have more information than myself will chime in and give you great advice, but those were my first reactions. I wish you the best and hope to hear back from you when you find out what's going on.

And to think they wanted to institute that over here. ARRGH!!mand wrote:dont have any of that stuff in the uk where i live doctors just dont care, and if the doctor's dont care then theres no other way
Seriously, you need to ASK your primary physician for a referral, even if it takes months to get. Be insistent. If need be, complain to your MP. Even so, expect a year or more before they get you on a machine. . .

There is a condition called "Cataplexy" (not sure I spelled this correctly) and you are describing it perfectly. It's a feeling of being paralyzed when you first wake up. It's a CLASSIC symptom of Narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder that you need to investigate. My daughter has it and basically, she can't stay awake during the day. She doesn't sleep well..has trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. Then, once she does sleep, we can't wake her up. She has trouble staying awake throughout the day. Your symptoms really sound alot like what my daughter has. She now takes medicine to help her wake up and stay awake throughout the day. The paralysis you describe is really a prime indicator of narcolepsy...you really need to look into this further. Why don't you try searching the internet for Narcolepsy and read everything you can. Then, once you've done that, search for a doctor in your area that specializes in narcolepsy....it's not a "popular" field of study and you need a doctor that really understands it.mand wrote: and when i wake up i cant move for the first 5mins so i tend to lay there for 10-15mins till i'm fully awake before tryign to get out of bed,
Good luck,

just found the london sleep centre and have emailed them, but most things seem to be private and cost too much to go to

I'm certainly not a doctor but I'm wondering if your leg pains are being caused by poor circulation. Are your feet cold? Do you have any areas on your legs that are red and warm to touch? If so, you could have a blood clot..I believe they can cause the pain you're describing. If you're that uncomfortable, why don't you find a doctor today...seems like you've given this plenty of time and it hasn't resolved itself yet.
Just a thought...

i know i dont have a blood clot,
my legs always seem fine when i get up in the morning , exp today,
i was laying in bed like i usally lay, and i've never woken up to pains in both legs, i did year year went to the hostpial as i had a sharp pain in one leg that at one time was soo painful that i couldnt walk on it but they just told me its sumthink to do with the muscles and just to take pain killers but that dont help tho it just cover the pain they checked for blood clot last time and said i dont have it, but then my hospital is the worse in the county and probley one of the worse in the uk think its a 1/2 star now as they are the worse and got most of their stars taken off,
will find out 2morrow when i've seen the nurse/doctor at the walk in centre
