I need a new sleep study to get a hybrid. What???

Post by oscar98 » Tue May 11, 2010 11:39 am

I'm having trouble with mouth breathing. My RT brought me a chin strap yesterday and it was no go because I guess I have a small head or something.

Anyway, I went in today and told her that if I don't get this figured out then I want to try a hybrid mask. She said I can't have one because that would require a pressure change and I would need a new titration to set the correct pressure.

I've read lots of posts about people switching between hybrids and nasal pillows and not once have I seen anyone say the change their pressure to do so.

What's the deal???

the RT thinks you wanted a bipap not a hybrid - take her in pictures of the mask

The new DME finally got them to fax over my prescription this morning and I went and picked up a copy. It has the diagnosis, says for lifetime use, has cpap, humidifier and pressure settings. I think I'm good to go. They still have not sent my husbands over but he called them and they are supposed to be mailing it to us.

I'm pretty sure she understood because I said that it was the mask with the nasal pillows and covers the mouth. She said I need a different pressure because the mask covers more surface area. However, she said I could get a full face mask. Well wouldn't that cover and even bigger area then a hybrid???

The "deal" is you're probably dealing with idiots.
They may also could have misspoken that you need a different prescription......if your current one is specific to something else.

Why keep feeding the hand that' biting you.........and picking your pocket?

Now that I have my prescription if I get a hybrid I will go with cpap.com or the auction site. My DME is obviously not going to let me have one. I don't understand why she thinks I need a new sleep study to get one.

She commented that most people don't like a hybrid and that four of her clients did the sleep study to get the new pressure and then within a month went back to their old mask.

I just wanted to make sure I wasn't making a mistake by going out and getting one on my own. I thought all I had to do was change the mask setting on my cpap.

Sometimes I wish ALL DME's, RTs and sleep docs suffered from sleep apnea. Maybe, just maybe they might understand the frustration some go through to comply with the prescribed therapy and people's needs for logical answers to legitimate questions. I, too, was told I needed a new titration for a new machine. I changed sleep docs when I was told that. I want to respect the professionals I have to deal with but requring a new sleep study for a mask change or any equipment adjustment, to me, is a money hungry scheme and I am not impressed with such garbage. The data obtained via a smart card are enough, IMO, for adjustments for the patient.

Is she new? In a small town?
Very strange. Sounds like she doesn't know what she's talking about.
Maybe she was told from higher ups to get all the money she could from her patients???

Hi, what you may not realize is that the majority of us change our pressures all the time, having learned from our data what is working and what isn't. No one gets a new study to do it, they just do it! If you believe everything the DME's tell you, you'll be in a large mess very shortly!

Huh? That's a new one on me and I'm in the DME business. Granted a hybrid doesn't work for everyone, but there's no reason to put off a patient with some ridiculous excuse. Go around her and get an Rx from your doc with the pressure and hybrid on it.

we need to collect all these funny (but not so funny for the patient) RT jokes into an RT jokes archive

patient: RT, I would like to get a new mask - the hybrid mask

RT: you need a new sleep study - these hybrid mask will need a different pressure setting

patient: then why not just use an Auto-CPAP so that it will automatically adjust the pressure?

RT: no way, we give you all straight CPAP that just collect compliance, so each time you change anything - you need to do a new sleep study

patient: no wonder our health care cost is higher and higher

In a small town? Depends on your definition of small. The business is located in a town of about 12,000 and she covers clients in multiple counties.
Very strange. Sounds like she doesn't know what she's talking about. Most of what she has told me lined up with what I've learned here but this is the second thing she said that made no sense at all.
Maybe she was told from higher ups to get all the money she could from her patients??? I honestly think you are on to something there. She wants to send me everything she can the minute insurance will allow it rather I need/want it or not.
This was the only DME I could find that would give me a data capable machine when I only had four months of rental left. I was wondering how they could afford to give me a new S9 on only four months of payments and I'm beginning to understand that they did it so they could try to milk my insurance for every dime they can on supplies.

She is a very nice lady and seems to care about her clients. When I expressed concern about getting supplies I didn't need she told me that she wouldn't send anything I didn't want or need and that she is paid by the hour and it doesn't matter to her. However, it's obvious that it matters to her boss.

That is a great idea! But let's be fair and quote them precisely. So let's start a thread and everyone contribute the idiotic/unhelpful/funny/inaccurate things your DME/RTs have told you. Cpapernewbie, this was your idea, so why don't you start it?
