New mask having a lot of leaks

Post by seeker01 » Fri May 07, 2010 2:14 pm

Ok my pressure was 13.5 and I was still having to many apneas so the DME ordered an APAP to do a trial. The problem is my pressure is going as high as 20, which was causing a lot of leaks with the FULLLIFE mask I was using. So asked to try the Mirage Quattro full face (mouth breather) but I'm having even more leaks. I know part of the problem is I put the mask on an adjust at a low pressure and then later in the night when the pressure increases I have to readjust the mask. Hopefully once the trial is done I will go back to a straight CPAP and the problem will fix its self.

I have a couple of questions so here I go:

Is there a place in the clinical menu to put in the type of mask you are using? (I can get in and would like to check behind the DME )
What is consider a bad leak rate my information is below?

Minutes in large leaks 24.1 minutes
% of night in larger leaks 8.7%
Average leaks 50.7

Any and all advice will be appreciated

I will tell you if your machine is picking up large leaks at all it is TOO MUCH. The PR S1's don't seem to pick up "large leaks" very easily (assuming you are going by LED screen and not software). I've deliberately caused large leaks for long periods of time and NOTHING shows up. So those must be some big leaks to show up in that menu!

Quattro's are very hard to adjust to be leak free, and if you get them leak free in one position and move, they will leak in the new position or with a higher pressure. Make sure your face and seal are clean, although some people swear by putting lanisoh on your face where the cushion touches. If you know how to get into the clinician's menu, try adjusting the straps with the cushion inflated at your high pressure. Try to adjust the straps only during the inspiratory (breathing IN) phase, so that the cushion will be fully inflated.

As far as the mask setting, in the clinician's menu you will see something that says "System One". That's the mask setting.
