Have appointment with Sleep doc in few hours.

Post by beadedbiker » Wed May 05, 2010 10:58 am

This is mostly a nervous rant.

When I called my sleep center to find out my titration results, and see how the script would be written for my CPAP, I found out that the Doc likes to write for an exact machine of his choice. I just get to choose the DME. Now on the plus side he insists on a data capable machine, and its usually the PR System One, or the F&P 440.

So when I told them after extensive research I wanted the Resmed S9, they told me I'd have to come in and see the doctor to 'discuss' my request. When I also mentioned that I felt APAP was the way to go for my therapy, they told me he 'never' prescribes APAP. I told them he was fixing to be disappointed if he wants a perfect track record, yes, perhaps snarky was not the way to go, but this lack of sleep thing was getting to me.

Geez. Cranky woman on no sleep with mind made up versus sleep doc with agenda and kickbacks from PR reps to protect. This may not be pretty.

I have my arguments written out because I know being a walking zombie I'll forget half of them, and a whole bunch of supporting docs and arguments for an APAP over a CPAP. I even have a written letter requesting my study results, in case they 'forget' that I already requested them last week.

The wait for study/results/appointment has been going on over 3 months now, and I'm sure they try and sleep deprive you until they can railroad you into agreeing with whatever they want to do. Boy are they sure going to be disappointed in me.

Am I forgetting anything? (other than a positive attitude )

Eva

It sounds like you are ready to go. Just stick to your guns and don't back down. You don't have to be snarky just be polite but firm. This is the rest of YOUR life, not the doctor's. You are the one that hired the doctor and you can hire another one.

In looking back I know my father had undiagnosed sleep apnea and he suffered greatly for it. I WILL NOT go through that. Using a cpap is easy compared to that.

A Harley Davidson sportster.

UPDATE: Well that went waaaaaay better than I expected. Apparently the person who really needs a good nights sleep is the docs receptionist.

The doc was really nice, took a full history, went over both sleep studies with me, asked me what machine I wanted, when I told him the Resmed, he asked me why, and I told him I preferred the method of rainout prevention they used, and he was more than happy to prescribe that machine, no hard sell on the Respironics as I was led to believe would be coming from Ms. "apparently someone is actually crankier than me at 2 in the afternoon" Receptionist.
I also asked him for an APAP, and just as I started to launch into my pre-emptive diatribe entitled '50 greatest reasons to prescribe an APAP', he interrupted me and told me he had no problem with that.
He asked me what DME I wanted - and actually I want to use a DME from a different town, because they have an awesome RT, and the Doc knew him, said he was indeed probably one of the best RTs around and called him right then and there to put in the equipment order to make sure I got the exact right machine.

So I'm one of the the lucky ones. Apparently I do have a great sleep doc and I'm soon to be the happy owner of a Resmed S9 Autoset, just like I wanted. Yay.

Congratulations Eva!
Way to go, glad you got lucky all the way around, but you were prepared and armed to the teeth and ready for anything!

That is the kind of SPUNK you are going to need when you get your machine. I can tell youre not a quitter, so you are going to be okay.

"apparently someone is actually crankier than me at 2 in the afternoon" Receptionist"

Funny thing, my doctors receptionist was very cranky too.. Maybe its because they give the machines out on monday, and by tuesday
everyone is calling back telling them "how they really feel" about what went on their first night!

Be sure to call and leave a message for the doctor if SOMETHING GOOD happens..

I called mine yesterday and left a message with the doctor's receptionist about what a great night I had with my new S 9.
The receptionist called back in the afternoon to clarify...... as nobody ever calls back with good news!

Ach, I'm in love w/your doctor!!! Please send him my way! And kudos to you to. Obviously you handled things rather well yourself!!! But I really do want your doctor for my very own. Really, really. Just the fact that he respects the value of a fully data capable PAP makes him priceless!!

Congrats, I had similar worries with my doc,
but a simple phone call and she was willing to prescribe
whatever machine I picked out, no fuss.

I too am waiting on an S9 now.

If you are computer savvy, hit the thread for the software download,
they will send you the link in a PM. It is a free download, I
already downloaded my copy.

I am buying supplies in advance too, based on recommendations I have seen
here, blue painters tape (for mouth), lanolin (for mask seal), distilled water, stuff like that.

I am, I think, in something of a similar situation.

After my sleep study and follow-up with the doctor to discuss results, I was given a prescription and directed to what I take to be a DME operating out of the same building. The prescription I was given seems to be quite general (no specific machine is mentioned). I have an appointment for Friday for setting me up with all the equipment (mask fitting, etc).

I also would like to be set up with the S9, but as I have no experience with such things, I'm not sure quite how to work it in or bring it up. I am heartened by the OP story (after the update), so I'll just have to try to be clear and somewhat more forward than I'm used to being.

You might check ahead of time to see what other DME's are in your area and will work with your insurance. That way if they won't set you up with what you want of Friday you will know what your options are. If the DME won't work with you either try getting your doctor to write and prescription for that exact machine or just try shopping around with other DME's.
