congestion, ugh

Post by echo » Tue May 04, 2010 8:06 am

I'm starting to get to my wit's end. Last few days (but probably a bit longer) I have been having massive night-time congestion and waking up like I did pre-cpap (i.e. oxygen deprived). Puffy eyes, morning headache, very lethargic, sleeping a lot. AHI is all "normal" so <1 or <2, though my breathing rate is slightly elevated.

The annoying thing is that once I wake up and take the mask off, the congestion clears. I'm fine during the day. I've tried everything, sinus rinses, cleaning everything filters humidifier etc, aurgh. Usually the cleaning and the sinus rinse routine helps but not this time. Humidification is fine too, not too high not too low. Nothing changed.

I still can't get the Quattro or the UMFF or the liberty to work for me. I've ordered another FFM but I won't have it for another 2 weeks.

The GERD meds I started a few days ago seem to be helping with the reflux (at least the acid content is being reduced, no funny taste in my mouth) and I'm not eating close to bedtime.

rant rant rant!

I wonder if I'm getting a sinus infection, it's not all "clear" if you know what I mean.

wow! i didnt know OSA celebs also has 'normal' people problems .

on a more serious note though...Its probably a sinus infection. My congestion was very bad throughout the day with my nasal pillow mask and even after not using it for a while it still remained for a good few days. the fact that your goes away when you remove the mask points to a different problem--i.e. not mask related. You also seem to have eliminated the variables that could have caused your congestion so by logic it should be an infection. good luck with it!

p.s. when i experienced problems I was quick to buy something I thought would help only to find, after spending the money, that it wasnt always the best idea. think twice before purchasing something new.

Turn down, or off, your humidifier, it's known to cause congestion in many people and you don't 'need' it for therapy.

Its like $5.00 at walmart.

woah when I did become an OSA celeb i feel so cool! i'm about to resurrect another old thread, you'll see I'm not in the clear yet!

So jackpot, i went to the doc, gots loads of meds. I've given up on trying to do things "naturally". I got some pseudo-ephedrine + something for allergies (yay, i might just make 2000 posts tonight i'm gonna be so hopped up on drugs ), some strong steroid nose spray, oh that's it.

I can't turn down the humidifer any further, and I refuse to sleep without it. My sinuses get majorly sore within 2 minutes without it. Currently i'm using either passover mode or the lowest setting, since it's getting slightly more humid now that the heater's not on full blast. I could try turning it UP but then the congestion kicks in instantly.

Classic Silent Gerd symptoms - had that problem for years.

Have been on Nasonex for past 2 years & it has made a difference.

Just another 0.2 cents worth - good luck

yup DSM! I started on the GERD meds but I'm wondering if they're not strong enough. I'm wondering if the GERD has been there a long long time -- in connection with my recent "lung function" thread .. my mother just told me that i had sort of runny nose/ post nasal drip since I was about 1 years old.

Last night i slept pretty well, rather well enough given that i took the descongestant with pseuo-ephedrine at 9pm!

Post nasal drip had been a constant problem for me to - for years I sniffed salt water. But slowly the Nasonex seemed to do the job.

Cheers
