Does Resmed leak rate mouth leaks?

Post by pam933 » Tue May 04, 2010 10:37 am

Can anyone tell me if mouth breathing would show up in the Resmed leak rate that I see on the machine? Or is mouth breathing totally separate from the leak rate on the machine?
I'm trying to rule out anything that's interfering with my therapy - and mouth breathing is one that I haven't ruled out yet. But my leak rates are good - so if mouth breathing shows up on in the leak rates then I can rule that out.

If you are opening your mouth the leak rate will be higher. A Resmed machine will be able compensate up to about .35 but the lower you can get your leak rate the better therapy. Also you should have your mask listed in the Resmed machine so it knows. Any mask that is not listed on menu is put down as "standard mask".

You can't really separate mouth leaks from mask seal leaks unless you use a FF mask (in which case it will be a masl seal leak).

If you seal your mouth (ie. w/ tape, polydent glue, or some other way), then you can rule out mouth leaks when using a nasal type mask ... otherwise, machine can not differentiate between mask and mouth leaks.
