Hose Lift and TSA

Post by Roscer » Sun May 02, 2010 4:36 pm

I'm curious to know if somebody has traveled with his/her Hose Lift System in it's cpap bag in the cabin of an airplain.

I was wondering if the TSA will admit my Hose Lift in the cabin with my cpap. I will travel and I'm not planing to register my lugagge, so I need to take it in the cabin. Are this small pieces of metal been seen as a weapon for an oversealous TSA agent? I'm scared of loss my Hose Lift if I take it with me.

Some body has already tryed?

I've only got half of an answer for you.
No, I have not had a problem with my hose support structure in carry on.
BUT, mine is built out of 1/2 inch PVC pipe, so not quite the same "threat level".
Sorry,

TerryB

Thanks Terry, mine is built of pieces of aluminium tubing like a blind's cane but only less than a 1/4 inch (3/16"?)diameter. It could easily be seen as a thread, that's why I would know if somebody has already pass with that through TSA.

Do what knitters do.

While knitting needles are specifically permitted on board airplanes, it really comes down to the individual TSA inspector's call. There are stories about knitting needles being confiscated. So when flying with my knitting, I always carry a self-addressed, stamped and padded envelope. If my needles are refused by a TSA inspector, I can put them in the envelope and mail it home, then go through security again.

I don't have any sense of how bulky and heavy a hose lift is, but if it would reasonably fit in a padded mailing envelope you can take along in a carrryon, I'd say it's worth the risk.

I don't have a direct answer for you, but I do have some suggestions:

I travel a lot, and to date, I've never taken a hose management system with me. What I do is carry a piece of string about 3 ft long. With this, I usually can find some place to tie the hose to (such as the headboard of the bed).

I've also recently purchased, but have not yet tried a cozy-hose boss.

This system looks like it is very portable and will not take up much room in your luggage. My guess is that you will have no problem with it in TSA.
I'm workin' on it.

Really? Last few times I flew, knitting needles were specifically listed on the airline's list of items that can't be carried in the carry-on!
Luckily they still don't say anything about crochet hooks

Here is a nice post from JoyD on various other solutions for travelling + hose management: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=50927&p=472682#p472682

I'm not sure what your hose lift looks like, but unless it has a sharp edge or point, and is longer than 4", you shouldn't have any problems. If you do, explain to them that it's part of a medical device. If they still don't go along with you, ask to speak to a supervisor.

Many items which were previously not allowed are now OK (such as knitting needles, tools 7" or less, scissors 4" or less, etc.). For a complete list of prohibited items: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/ ... items.shtm

My Hose Lift System look like this:

https://www.cpap.com/productpage/flexib ... -lift.html

It's very light and easy to install, I like it a lot. On top of that it's not too expensive.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions, if I'm too scared to bring my Hose Loft with me and are not able to find one of the suggestions I will bring the 4 feet piece of string, I hope they will not think I will attach the pilot

My apologies I made a typo on my avatar when I wrote the first tread then I was not able to include the link for the Hose Lift System.

Another option is to take along a temporary/removable hook to attach the string to if there isn't anything handy. 3M makes them.

Uh oh. Typing this just made me realize that I left one attached to a picture frame in the hotel I checked out of yesterday. Oh well. I hope the housekeeping staff know how to take it off.
