My S9 wheezes
Resmed S9 Auto with climate line (80degrees), Integrated humidifier (manually set to 5) (7-20cmH2O, 1 of EPR), Medium Resmed Quattro full face mask, Cloth Liner, Chinstrap (yes chinstrap with full face)...
My S9 has a very slight end expiratory wheeze whenever I take a deep breath. With this exception it is still very quiet compared to the other machines I have tried. It is hardly bothersome compared to the revving and whining of the System One I was using. I think I have the disposable humidifier. Could this be causing the noise? It seems to be coming directly from the CPAP unit. I would still recommend this unit over others I tried but the slight wheeze is a little annoying. Any ideas?

Re: My S9 wheezes
Others have noticed a similar noise. I think mine does too, but it's so quiet it's hard to tell - even with the "wheeze" it's still more silent than my previous-gen machine (RemStar Pro).

I am on a life quest for the perfect nights sleep so I may be nit picking. My guess is that my older machines might have wheezed but you wouldn't have heard it over the loud hum of the motor and hiss of the air intake. Of course I found the hum somewhat comforting (like a fan running). So far the S9 is much more comfortable and responsive. I may order a new humidifier chamber just to try. I think it might be leaking where the humidifier chamber meets the outlet. The door pushes it on to the outlet. Maybe I will put something between the door and the chamber to tighten the connection.

It might be the mask - I think other people have said that as well? What is your 95% pressure reading?

Re: My S9 wheezes
I do better on a auto setting 8-20 cmH2O rather than a set pressure. My pressure needs vary that much at times. Especially if I drink a few beers. The machine wheezes at the end of any deep breath. The mask doesn't wheeze on my old machine, (just tested to be sure). It seems to be coming from the box.

Re: My S9 wheezes
Have you tried turning EPR off, to see if it still makes the sound?
Re: My S9 wheezes
Try listening for the same sound in the morning after the machine has been working all night.
I'm guessing that you hear some extra sounds when you are breathing very deeply at the beginning... when you are struggling for air.
Your settings Ramp and EPR can have much to do with this.
Sounds can be very subjective. How loud is loud ??? Its in the ear of the beholder
If it is objectionable... call your DME and get him to make some comparisons. If it is "your" machine that is louder or wrong... they will switch it out... willingly.
That's what you pay them for.

Re: My S9 wheezes
Turning the EPR off and on doesn't change the wheeze. I will check the sound in the morning to see if it the same as at the beginning of the night, I'm not sure about that one. Admittedly it is a very slight but high pitched noise only occurring at the end of any sighs or deep breaths. It is still the quietest machine I have used but my old unit (Remstar Plus) had a constant hum which I found comforting. I wouldn't trade back though. This sound is high pitched and annoyed me only the first couple of nights and it never bothered my wife so I'm probably just sensitive. I would still say it's the best machine I have used (I have used 6). I was more or less wondering if this is common noise or if my unit had a problem?

Welcome to the forum! I"m in the Saginaw, Michigan area.
Big Daddy, little bike.
An RRT, RPSGT and you were using a RemStar Plus? A Plus? That just tickles my funny bone.
You've been thru 6 PAPs?? How long have you had OSA? Or are you just hard on your equipment?

Like I said in the thread above -- there are birds outside my window in the morning that are louder and more insistent. It's still hardly noticeable after almost two months. It's a known phenomenon, but it's not a deal-breaker. Trust me, I'm a very light sleeper, so if it were, the machine would probably have sailed out a second-story window by now. Even with the 'chirp', it's hands-down quieter than the M-Series pro. I don't have to use ear plugs anymore.

Re: My S9 wheezes
I noticed this morning that after using the S9 unit all night that it did not wheeze in the morning even with a deep breath. Not sure what that means...again I'm used to the slight wheeze now just making sure I didn't get a bum unit. I see from the thread Dream weaver provided it is common so that is good. But I agree the S8 did not have the wheeze. I will tell the Resmed rep about this thread. They need to know. It shouldn't wheeze.
I've been on CPAP for about a year. Working in a sleep lab the reps let me try the latest equipment. Oddly my best days are after using straight CPAP but I sleep better and more comfortable on the S9. C-flex and BiPAP disturb me so I didn't need that feature. I liked adjusting the flow response setting on the Remstar plus. Most other straight CPAP machines don't have that feature. It allows you to adjust how much flow is delivered when you inhale. On some machines I feel air starved on lower pressures. Also it has good humidifier output. You'll find a lot of Remstar fans looking for parts to keep 'em working. The thing I'm figuring out is that the Rescan reports are really valuable especially now that I'm using the an auto.

That's great that you get to try out various PAPs! RestedGal and I were discussing volunteering our services and becoming professional xPAP trialers for the manufacturers.

Re: My S9 wheezes
This is probably not the noise - but - I used to get a small but noticeable "whistle" when breathing out with the quattro - it was coming from where the plastic elbow joins the mask (really needs a seal). A couple of turns of waxed dental floss cured it for good.

Re: My S9 wheezes
Thanks for the dental floss tip. I'll remember that. But no wheeze using a different CPAP unit.

Re: My S9 wheezes
Hey my S9 stopped wheezing the last two nights! I'm glad but what was causing the wheeze?
