Almost feel like I'm cheating

Post by detcord » Fri Apr 30, 2010 12:26 pm

Like most of you I have known for a while that something wasn't right, but was too hard headed to get checked out. Finally went to my Doctor, and had a sleep test ordered. Due to my insurance company, I had an at home test, which showed among other things an AHI of 59.5. Dr. prescribed treatment, and again due to my insurance company, at home titration with an RemStar System One Auto. Last night was my first night, and it didn't start out very well. I had a little trouble falling asleep, and woke up at 0230 AM fighting the machine. I took off the mask and decided that if this is what I needed to do to stay alive, I'd just as soon die young. After about 20 minutes of feeling sorry for myself I put the mask back on, and fell asleep. I awoke at 0630 AM and felt OK. As the day has gone on I just keep feeling better and better! I almost feel guilty for feeling so good, and I've got more done today that I have in the past several weeks. I don't care what I have to put up with through the night, I'll do it to feel this good during the day. As I heard an old comedian once said " I love the air, it make me feel high!"

I would bet that just about everyone on this forum has done the old throw the mask across the room thing and it will probably happen again but you just keep climbing back on the horse as they say.
The fact that you feel great the first day after starting treatment speaks volumes. It sometimes takes weeks or months for people start feeling better. Lucky you.

I am having trouble with mouth breathing and my current mask. I will get a new mask and refuse to give up. I will make this work for me. I will feel rested. I will get a night sleep without choking to death. I dont feel on top of the world yet. I do feel better than when i started.

After years of battling migraines, drug reactions, zombie states and so on - yeah to me using cpap also feels like cheating - It is so bloody easy, it works while you sleep! No time consuming relaxation techniques, no drugs making me feel stupid, no pain, no excuses.

I wake up in the morning feeling this wonderful, incredible sense of calm. I just feel GOOD. It doesn't always last all day, but there's no down side to it.

It's kind of like taking some illicit drug, without the side effects and "bad trips" (well, maybe wrestling a mask all night sometimes counts).

I do have this sense that if everybody knew about how good this feels, they'd be selling CPAP machines on street corners, and someone would try to regulate it (more than they already do).

I know what you mean. If you could find a way to bottle this stuff they'd make it illegal. I know I'll have my ups and downs, but so far so good.

Night two went well, kept the mask on all night, up at 0600 and so far so good on the day. Do have some questions on the machine however. Resmed System One Auto that starts at 4 for 20 minutes and then goes up. I have trouble with the 4 setting getting air, and then sometime during the night, I have woke up with the machine feeling like its trying to blow the mask off. When it drops and hits the pressure to work, it feels great. I was told it would do this for several nights before it established the right pressure for me. I tried to look at the data, but it seems like you need at least 4 nights before it appears.

It is called "ramp" feature. Most people feel very uncomfortable at 4 - That is why it gets set at that pressure - to test your fortitude LOL.

Search for the clinician manual for your machine on the net - Then you can adjust all of it. Most of us have turned the ramp feature off since it usually casuse people problems.

Everything still going well. I had the clinicians manual with my machine, so I went in and adjusted the starting pressure, so hope this helps. Went to bed last night with the idea of sleeping in, still up at 0630, bright and shiny. I'm blessed to be one of the lucky ones that have adapted to the hosehead way of life so far. Hope this continues. Good luck to all.

Good Luck and hang in there. Your right this stuff is addictive. By 9:00 pm I'm looking foraward to putting that nask on and drifting off to sleep. I don't like the ramp feature either. I just start at 8 pds and I'm asleep before it goes up any higher. I've been on the System one for 4 months and a "hoser" since Nov. 09.
