Explanation of Data

Post by sleepyhollow » Mon Apr 26, 2010 10:33 am

I am new to all this stuff and was hoping someone could explain the following data to me:

Leak: 0.08L/s
VT: 420-760
MV: 7.1-8.8
Press: 12.2
AHI: 4.6
AI: 0.7

Okay, the easiest first:

It is obvious you have a Resmed as to my knowledge only Resmed PAPs report in L/s by default. (I think all Resmed models allow changing to L/M). The mask allowed vent rate charts are all in L/M.

L/s = liters per second
L/M = liters per minute
Press = pressure = the reported pressure on a Resmed is the 95th percentile = the pressure at or below which you spent 95% of the night or designated time period
AI = apnea index =number of apneas per hour
AHI = = apnea/hypopnea index = number of apneas and hypopneas per hour (subtract the AI from the AHI to get the HI)
VT = tidal volume = the volume of air inspired or expired in one respiratory cycle (breath)
MV = minute ventilation = the volume of air breathed in (or out) w/in any 60 second period

Nice leak. Shoot for zeros. But be happy with what you got.
VT and MV are not all that important clinically for most simple OSA patients, as I understand it.
That is your 90% pressure. For 90% of the night, you were at or below 12.2 cm H2O.
Your apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) looks good for that machine.
Your apnea index looks good for that machine, since anything below 1.O is good, according to what I've read in this forum.
AI is more important than AHI with that machine, from what I've read here.

The bigger questions are (1) How do you feel? and (2) What were your numbers during your diagnostic sleep test? The numbers from a sleep test and the numbers from your home machine are not directly comparable, since the home-machine numbers are mostly just for trending purposes--to see if you are doing better or worse over time. But comparing the two (home numbers and study numbers) can still useful in a broad sense, in my opinion.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info...my sleep test numbers as I know them were 82 apneas per hr. with an avg length of apnea at 1:00 minute in duration. As far as how I feel...I do feel different, but not fully rested. From the forums here and from my Dr, I have heard of the term 'Sleep Debt', so I am assuming that it could take some time before I feel fully rested. Not sure what that feels like. My Dr. seems to think that I have had this for nearly 20 or so years and I just over compensated for my sluggish/lousy feeling. I am not obese, but my mouth and throat structure aren't good. (long uvula, large tongue and large tonsils) plus I have sinus problems....yeh...lucky me.
