Question about swift fx

Post by HelpMeBreath » Wed Apr 14, 2010 8:57 pm

Hi everyone. I have a question about the swift fx.. I try to sleep on my side but always end up on my back.. I have the Swft II but I can only sleep on one side, otherwise I am sleeping on the hose and cutting air off. Unfortunately i usually end up on my back anyway. I have to hide the hose under my pillow, back under the bed, up to the machine because my siamese kitten REALLY wants to puncture the hose, and has actually.

My question, does anyone have experience with back and side sleeping with the FX? The slightest touch of the hose will wake me up, so I really need to not get tangled up in the hose. I worry that the FX might be weird if I am on my back.. Im itching to buy a new mask, its just time, and I feel I can do better than the Swift II.. But I cant decide between the LT and the FX.. The LT looks appealing because the hose would naturally go up and over my head behind the pillow, but the thought of a hose between my eyes worries me because I love to read in bed.. seems like it make me go cross eyed like my cat..

I will keep searching the forum for similar question, but if anyone wants to chime in, I would certainly listen..

Still taping and loving it...

Ben

the FX you have to have down (which is my preferred arrangement- my machine is at my feet and I run the hose under the covers on one side of me)

I have found the FX a little more of a problem to deal with when I move than the LT was. It is more likely to catch on the covers and then be noisy. Even though the hoses look similar, I just don't have the freedom of movement with the FX that I had felt with the LT. I did change from a 10 ft hose to a 6 ft hose recently but think I have used the LT with 6 also and it didn't snag like the FX has.

The FX is lighter by far and quiet (as I found the LT to be). I never used Swift II but had used original Swift which is no different in hose arrangement than the II.

I also found I had to go down a size in pillows on the FX over other Resmed masks I had used (Liberty, Swift, Swift LT).

I found the FX more stable on my head w/o extra straps needed for the other swifts but I ended up adding one anyhow.

One thing is - the FX you can't rotate the pillows - you get what you get - and if the angle is wrong, it is wrong. The LT you have the ability to rotate (some restrictions on how little) the pillows to get a better angle. I think the original swift (so II also) allowed a better ability to rotate the pillows to match you nose than the LT.

The FX hose does not have to be down across your body.

I have my machine on the floor, at the head of my bed. I just run the hose up over the headboard of my bed, use a velcro tie to attach the hose to the headboard and then just attach the thin hose from the FX to the thicker air hose. I spend time on both sides and, on my back. Having the hose up over my head makes it easy to roll around without difficulty.

You're welcome.
Lot's of folk rig various and assorted types of things to secure their air hose to their headboard. I've been using CPAP for over 5 years now and have tried about 20 different masks. Having a way to have the hose from my mask going up over my head is a God-send. Can toss and turn until the cows come home (in fact, the cows have NEVER come home) and the mask hose is well out of the way.

Another mask worth trying is the AeioMed/Aura/Twilight/Headrest whatever they are calling it these days. I find it amazingly stable and absolutely forgiving of all of the tossing, turning and side-sleeping that I do. For me, the Swift FX is a very close second but the AeioMed is best.

Regarding the FX, (forgive me for yelling) READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!!! In the instructions, they comment about how the side supports are to be placed on your cheeks. These instructions really make a difference and, when placed correctly, the mask can be quite loose on the face; you don't need to crank it tight to get a good seal.

Hi!

I am loving my Swift FX. I found it helpful to go to the http://www.resmed.com website and view the video about how it should be fitted. I fit both straps but then when I was laying down, I tweaked them just a bit again. While it seems so light, like a little nothing, it is very sturdy and I am a side sleeper - usually the same side, but sometimes I like to turn and sleep on the other side and there is no problem with this. It is by far my favorite mask because it is so light and quiet. The only time that I have trouble wearing it is if I have a really bad cold and then the air going up my nose is too harsh and so I go to a nasal mask.

So, try the Swift FX - you won't be disappointed!

Wishing you peaceful, restorative sleep,

Jersey Girl
