Today I chickened out....

Post by TheDreamer » Mon Apr 12, 2010 4:23 pm

Today I had my annual physical....though annual is kind of loose, since the sleep study/sleep apnea, etc was triggered by my physical in 2008...and I was seeing my doctor more often than I wanted to...so I didn't have a physical in 2009.

I went in with a list of things I considered asking this time around....tried to have him look at my list, but he wasn't going for that...wanted me to ask each question. It was a struggle to compile the list, and as I was doing it...I would look back and want to cut stuff out, but I resisted. Until the appointment; when I did start dropping questions.

First question was the result of my FSH/LH test and whether more testing was needed. In the previous he had only tested FSH, and because the number wasn't low...it wasn't cancer. Instead it was high, which my mom/aunt say should mean I get another test to find out why it is high, but hormone levels are low. Was strange, that he did a google search while I was there...though he ignored the first hit of wikipedia....

He agreed to getting the test done.

Then I discussed the results of my healthscreening at work....BP had been high ~130/90, but at the physical BP was good (124/70)...fasting glucose was high, but improving.... good cholesterol is low, but the statin to lower my bad cholesterol doesn't care....and the numbers show that its helping.

Then, there were the other questions....now that sleep apnea is being treated with CPAP...I've started having insomnia. Asked about things like RLS, Cataplexy, though now I realize he might have gotten it wrong and thought I had said Catalepsy....

He wrote me a script for Ambien to try for a month.

Asked him about the prior diagnosis of hypoglycemia...and he said I didn't have that, more likely something related to my sleep deprivation. Since the symptoms didn't occur at the right time, and typically didn't respond to popping sugar.

Of course, now I'm wondering if it actually C. I didn't get to the part where I will also have these symptoms if I get really, really angry....

Also left out other stuff, like asking if I should be seeing a sleep doc.... though partly because I had done a search on sleep docs in my area that are in my network, and there's only one and he's not taking new patients. And, out of town is too far away to walk....but too close to fly.

I'm sure things would be different if I hadn't fallen asleep doing 120klicks and flipped the car off the highway. Wonder if I would still have Sleep Apnea?

I don't know...

since it was basically the uncontrolled falling asleep at inappropriate times and feeling sleepy a lot...that prompted the sleep study in the beginning...and cpap hasn't made all of that go away yet.

the doctor did have me do an EEG earlier this year for Narcolepsy...though people online and the EEG tech have said that I should really be getting another sleep study (along with an MSLT). And, that's probably true...since I don't see what sitting in a dark room with a bright strobe light was supposed to tell me about my sleep problems.

But, I've come to the conclusion that I'm afraid....I'd rather there not be anything more wrong with me....

I've never heard of an EEG as a means of diagnosing narcolepsy. I would think that's what they would do if they suspected seizures. I think the MSLT is the only method of diagnosing it, short of possibly cerebral spinal fluid (not even sure if that is true, or if I just made that up...).

What makes you think you have cataplexy?

The strobe light is valid - many people have seizures brought on by flashing lights. CSF has nothing at all to do with sleep problems.

Mostly from talking to other people online.... though the occasional boughts of weakness and shakiness that was originally dismissed by my previous primary as hypoglycemia....has me wondering, since it tends to happen when I'm experiencing strong emotions...something I generally avoid.

Especially since I was feeling rather angry the other day...and then it happened....and eating something has never helped....

Tends to happen when I'm particularly anxious/stressed too....

Because normally everybody drives about 10 over the speed limit....

Well, since I was 1500 miles away from Kansas when I had the accident....I think my friends here in Kansas are safe. Plus I didn't know that I would be in Kansas back then....family thought it was the last place in the world that I'd ever end up.
