Husband heard me clear across the house ...

Post by CMorrison64 » Tue Apr 06, 2010 7:07 pm

Last night, he said he could hear me snoring THROUGH my CPAP all the way across the house ... is this something that happens?

I have snored twice that I know of since beginning CPAP therapy, both when nearly completely blocked from congestion but nothing that loud...once just loud enough to wake me up (sound awakens me) & the other reported the next morning my roomie at a convention anf not very loud, she was still awake when I was and I shifte position and stopped. Doesn't sound good...snoring is pretty much eliminated on CPAP therapy. How do you feel?

My sleep doc told me that snoring happens when the airways narrow, and things start to vibrate, and make the snoring noise. Not the scientific explanation.

It may be that your cpap pressure is insufficient to keep your airway open, or maybe you were sleeping on your back, and that position caused airway collapse. Or did you take any medication that might effect your central nervous system eg. benadryl, etc.

How long have your had your cpap? Is it possible to trade it in/upgrade? I noticed that you do not have a data capable machine, and this is a disadvantage, because you don't know if you were having apneas or hypopneas, along with the snoring. Do you have access to an oximeter, perhaps you could monitor your oxygen desaturation at night, as an alternative.

If the snoring continues, you could talk to your sleep doc about getting a data capable machine on loan, or adjusting your cpap pressure.

I have snored when there's not enough humidity. If that's what it is for you, a sinus rinse before bed may help. Or you could turn up the humidity.

Just a thought, but before I became familiar with cpap , I thought what I was hearing was my husband snoring but it was really his mask leaking a LOT. The Quattro can be a little finicky to get a good seal.

Dori, I don't think I would be anywhere that polite describing my fights with my Quattro mask! That's part of why I'm still awake and posting at about 3:30AM.

To answer all ... first of all I am sooooo exhausted today .... can't keep eyes open, drowsy driving to work. Yes I was sleeping on my back and I had taken Xanax. Then the seal kept leaking and leaking and I finally took it off. Then went to go sleep on couch as all this hissing from the mask and snoring kept my husband awake last night (yes it happened again last night); so going to call my ENT and also Apria and see what they suggest. Don't know if it may be a contributing factor but I am on day 9 of 12 days of 12 hour shifts (shoot me dead) actually it was 21 but I ended up being on call 2 of those days (YEAH ME!!!). So could being overly worked contribute? Thanks for all the responses.

If my MD orders a data capable machine, will my insurance cover that (it covered this one 100%) or not? Thanks.

Just another tidbit ... when I had my sleep studies they told me I was having 102 apneic episodes and hour with my Pulse Ox going to 78%; and even with my CPAP on during the study I was still averaging about 25 apneic episodes.

Oh,Oh! John, Never thought I would have to have a "talk" with you! I can't remember your "mask odessey" right now, but have you ever tried the UM? We're great fans of this mask, it has really worked for us where so many others(especially the Q) almost had us giving up.

When I've had mask leaks, they sounded like a bodily function, but it wasn't "snoring"!

Mine was definitely snoring ... I woke myself up both nights with it. Just like before CPAP. A RT here at work told me about the Gold Seal mask so I'm going to see if I can locate one full face and she said my pressure might not be high enough. So going to call both MD and Apria today.
