My best friend had gastric bypass surgery oh, about two years ago. After that he dropped something like 150 pounds over a few months. Since then he's put quite a bit of it back on. He and his wife are both doing one of those eating programs so we'll see how it goes.

Crash diets and surgeries only last as long as you're on them. Once people revert back to their old ways the weight comes right back on. 1 to 2 pounds a week is definately the way to do it because you're not making a radical change that will be impossible to stay with.

Oh how I wish. I was actually thinking on my walk that when I was 18 I could run five miles, do 120 pushups, then walk 20 miles through the woods carrying a full pack and rifle (I was in the Army at that point ). Now I get winded walking a mile. To be in that kind of shape again.

Snowdog,

I truly believe you are the type that will be there again in the future. You seem to have the drive and the desire to get back into shape, and you are doing something about it. You could sit at your desk or wherever during lunch and be sedentary, but you are out there walking. I give you credit, even if you can't give it to yourself.
