Re: OT: tongue problems (stress? nutrition? ??)
Never had that problem, but Listerene cures a lot of ills. hold in mouth and squish around, it will burn, that's a good thing. Vit "C", 2,000 units daily isn't a bad thing either. jim

I don't know if this is similar or not, but I will share anyway. A while back I was getting mouth soreness, mostly on the back of my tongue. I finally found something that worked--Activia yogurt. As long as I ate it, I had no problem. Eventually, I got really tired of the Activia, so I started taking acidophilus capsules which produce the same good results. If I remember correctly from my research, I think it is thrush. Hope this is some help.

The B vitamins are supposed to help with the oral mucosa, especially B12. So tell your friend to buy a good B complex vitamin and take it every day, along with several sublingual B12 tablets. A good multivitamin is a good thing to do too.
I notice that I get sores when I eat too many acidic foods (especially tomatoes) or if I eat rough food, like potato chips or french bread.
Is your friend on any medications/antibiotics? My mouth got real funky when I was on HRT during perimenopause. It would get horrible if I added antibiotics into the equation. I even had "hairy tongue" once!!! YUK.
Definitely tell your friend to eat yogurt with live cultures and take probiotics in pill form too.
My daughter used to get sores around the inside of her mouth and found that taking Lysine helped.

Your friend might try kids liquid benadryl gargle or hydrogen peroxide in warm water gargle.
EDIT:
I found out I was sensitive to some ingredients in toothpaste. I gave up toothpaste. and brush with baking soda or fluoride rinse.

Sugar. How much sweet stuff does your friend eat? This can cause canker sores on the tongue, often showing as inflamed taste buds. When you look at the tongue, if it's all white, or there are patches of white on the tongue - usually toward the throat, it could be oral thrush - a yeast infection caused sometimes by too many sweets and sometimes by other problems. It might be worth your friend talking to a doctor about it if this persists.
Recent cracks in teeth or broken fillings can also cause sore spots where the tooth's jagged edges touch the tongue. Talking to a dentist might be a good idea in that case.

I once had a side effect to blood pressure medication that caused sores on my tongue and sides of my inner mouth. The sores would come and go over a period of several monthes until I mentioned it to my Doctor. He changed my Medication and the sores went away.

As you see, it could be one of many things.

Geographic tongue? My son has this. From what I've read, it's not really "painful" but can be uncomfortable. Spicy foods, stress, allergy or asthma flares can make his tongue do some funky things!
