What to eat befor a sleep study

Post by newname » Sun Mar 28, 2010 1:49 pm

Seriously, eat a turkey dinner and you will sleep very well for your sleep study. It works for me all the time. I think turkey has tryptophane.

Hot roast turkey sandwich w/gravy, mashed taters, stuffing, only a little cranberries. No dessert! No sweets! 5 block leisurely walk to the sleep lab. Dang! Now I'm HUNGRY!

That's right. Also avoid cofeine's drinks starting afternoon prior to sleep study.

It is just erroneous lore that the small amount of tryptohan in turkey will make you sleepy (See: http://www.snopes.com/food/ingredient/turkey.asp).

The protein in the turkey actually helps moderate your insulin levels and keep you from being so sleepy. It is all the carbs that come from the bread stuffing, the sweet potatoes, the vegetables and the rolls that make you sleepy.

The best thing to do is practice good sleep hygiene for at least 48 hours before the study. Just google "sleep hygiene" and look at the Mayo Clinic site.

I also like to have on hand a sedative or Ambien in case of difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. Check this with your sleep doctor.

Slinky, Don't you wonder why the doctors don't make it standard practice to have an Ambien on hand? We hear stories regularly about people who could hardly sleep during their studies.

This is what you should eat before going to your sleep study - all in moderation, of course:

First Course: Chilled sour cherry consommé with vodka cream, king crab, and Yellowstone River caviar
Second Course: Celery and lobster bisque
Third Course: Salade Niçoise - 'fresh butter-lettuce foundation; green beans; halved hard-boiled eggs, ripe red tomatoes, and black olives; chunks of tunafish and freshly-opened anchovies...'
Fourth Course: Star anise blackberries with lemon sorbet
Fifth course: Asian-spiced duck breasts with ginger-chili glaze
Sixth Course: Grilled lamb chops with rosemary, Salt, and tapanade aioli
Seventh Course: Death by chocolate - (chocolate mouse, served frozen)

I think you should eat whatever is most typical of what you usually eat, so you will be most apt to sleep like you usually sleep. I think that same is true of drink. Most sleep labs advise not to drink alcohol prior to a sleep study, but unless someone is willing to stop drinking wine and/or whatever else they normally drink, I don't think sleep study results will be reliable unless they drink whatever the usually drink prior to sleep evaluation.

I am not a physician and anyone who is about to have a sleep study probably should consult one before deciding what to do. However, it seems naive to me to advise someone who normally drinks wine, or whatever, with dinner and doesn't intend to stop to not drink alcohol prior to a sleep study.

I think the great majority of people are highly unlikely to sleep like they do at home. They are in a new, strange environment, wired up, and with someone in a control room listening through an audio system and watching them via infrared cameras. That is one reason to be a proponent of data-capable machine with software - very useful for fine-tuning your CPAP settings over a longer period of time in your own bedroom.

I was fighting a cold and luckily the tester let me take a big shot of nyquil or i would not have been able to quit coughing or sleep at all.i had set up the appointment a month before and had gotten a cold that would not go away.

I had no trouble at all the first night. I was litterally falling asleep while she was hooking me up

The second night was harder because it was my first time with a mask on, and she eventually had to come in and switch it out to another one. I swear my current mask was just made for me. As soon as I had it, I was asleep. I lucked out big time in the mask department!

Ambian doesn't work for me. They gave it to me when I was in the hospital when I temporarily lost my sight. I was, understandably, a little upset. It didn't work. It had the opposite affect on me. Yet, half a dose of Nyquil will have me out for 10 hours.

I wonder what effect Ambien has on the results of the sleep study. Obviously Ambien raises the arousal threshold, so I wonder if that impacts RERAs or any other useful information, such as # of spontaneous arousals, etc.
