Hi,

I tried 3M paper medical tape. I find 2 shortcomings. First, it is breathable, which means it allows a bit of air leak. Second, the glue seems to easily dissolve in water. What happens is that I have 2 creases, one on either side of my lower lip. Water gets in there, and the pressure blows it through the adhesive. That opens up a path to leak.

I tired the sports tape. That worked really good, but it was a little messy to clean up. Also, I can only find it in 1-1/2 inch wide, and I seem to do better with 2 inch wide tape.

I am going to try the blue stuff next.

Like dreamstalker, I taught myself to not breathe through my mouth. Unfortunately I don't have the problem of lost weight changing anything yet, so it still works for me.
Hold your tongue up against your soft palate and consciously breathe through your nose. After a while it just happens....at least it did for me....
Good Luck!!!!
take care

Can you determine in what sleeping position that your mouth breathing is worse? For me, side sleeping it's not a problem. On my back (supine) it can be a big problem. I've been using an oral applance to keep my jaw / mouth closed and a Quattro FFM and these help, but nothing works as well for me as keeping my head in a side sleeping position. That, (along with CPAP), has been a HUGE breathrough with my therapy's success. Hard to figure out though without a spotter or a visual recording of what you are doing, when.

I MUST stay off my back to reduce OSA & snoring. I use a small backpack of solid styrofoam to keep me on my side (tennis balls too small), & use DIY customized soft foam pillow to keep my head in a side sleeping position to eliminate most OSA.

I had the same thought after reading the label....it seemed ironic that the tape is 'breathable' and we're using it to stop leakages. I stayed with the blue tape last night and will probably return the paper medical tape.

I wear them because the exhalation port on the EasyLife is pointed upwards and depending on how my hose is angled when sleeping, I either get some air on my eyes and/or my forehead....

I use the paper medical tape, with no problems. I know it says breathable, but remember this:
  • It will keep your lips together so it won't let air scape. Lips close = No air escaping.
  • It is breathable but it is not meant to be a help to breath through. The idea is to let air pass through to help air heal wounds but at the same time keeping the wound protected from the environment
  • There are different brands, different type/amount of glues. Johnson and Johnson seems to have the least resistant glue
What happens is that I have 2 creases, one on either side of my lower lip. Water gets in there, and the pressure blows it through the adhesive. That opens up a path to leak.-john-
That happen to me but I fixed that not wearing lipstick at all, or remove excess. I use the 1" wide tape so I wear to pieces one over my lips and the other covering more skin and over the first tape. I learned that removing lipstick excess made the trick so I use only one tape.

I don't have any problem with the paper tape being porous. A single piece of 1" paper tape placed vertically is all I find necessary to keep my lips pressed together. The seal is from the lips being together and it doesn't matter if the tape is porous or not.

Though I don't tape (don't mouth breathe), you all have presented an issue I've had for quite some time with tape and band-aids.....

Why is it that the tape and band-aids available to the "commercial" market has such crappy glue. Put on a band-aid and take a shower or wash your hands and the glue lets go, so you have to put on another one.
BUT,
If you are fortunate and have access to hospital "style" tape or band-aids they will stick until the material rots off....I've had bandages done at the hospital that stay on seemingly forever and when I pull them off the tape is still sticky.....(granted, most bandages should not be left on for an extended period and need to be changed regularly, but there are times when the doc tells you to leave it on for like 3 days...)

Why can't a drug store get that quality of material??? Even with brand names (from the hospital) I can't find the "good stuff" even at suppliers on the web!!!

Agree with those that note the tape needs to be able to "breathe". It helps keep the skin under the tape from "pruning" due to lack of air. Also helps glue to stick.....
Bottom line??? Whatever works the best for you!!!!!!
cheers
