I've Got a Question for You!

Post by ched03 » Tue Mar 16, 2010 7:08 am

Has the time change made anyone feel the way the felt before CPAP? My numbers have been very consistent, in fact, some of the best since I started treatment. Yesterday and today I have been so tired that it is nearly impossible to stay awake while driving. Towards the end of the day yesterday, I got that general ache all over my body like I used to have when I was so tired. Is it just me? I have been getting at my 7-8 hours of sleep each night like normal as well.

It will be a while before you can trust how your body feels. Based on my experience and what I've seen from others who post about this, during the first few months of xPAP therapy your body tends to be in repair mode. I often felt achy and tired. But overall, I found that I felt better. It just takes some time for our bodies to make up for lost time. Lots of important physiological activity occurs during deep sleep and REM sleep, which most of us prior to diagnosis had little for a long time. So, at least my experience was that I felt as if I should take two weeks of vacation to just sleep.

But it gets better.

Some references include:

... it may be that energy conservation and restoration is particularly important to the self-conscious human brain because it uses a tremendous amount of energy to plan, solve problems, reflect on itself, respond to a very complex stimuli, and ponder complicated thoughts.

The various stages of sleep appear to serve particular functions. For example, deep sleep affords the brain and body a profound state of rest by allowing it to go "offline" to recover from the energy that we expend during normal conscious wakefulness. In this sense, deep sleep may serve a major restorative function that renews physical and mental energy. Blood flow decrease to the brain during deep sleep so that it can be directed to the muscles to help replenish physical energy. There is also good evidence that our immune system turns on during deep sleep to combat illness, which is why we need more sleep when we are sick.

Deep sleep seems to be the most important stage of sleep for, if we are deprived of sleep, the brain will recover or "make up" deep sleep first. Furthermore, loss of deep sleep produces the greatest impairments in daytime functioning compared to the loss of other stages of sleep.

Wound healing has been shown to be affected by sleep. A study conducted by Gumustekin et al. in 2004 shows sleep deprivation hindering the healing of burns on rats.

It has been shown that sleep deprivation affects the immune system. In a study by Zager et al. in 2007, rats were deprived of sleep for 24 hours. When compared with a control group, the sleep-deprived rats' blood tests indicated a 20% decrease in white blood cell count, a significant change in the immune system. It is now possible to state that "sleep loss impairs immune function and immune challenge alters sleep," and it has been suggested that mammalian species which invest in longer sleep times are investing in the immune system, as species with the longer sleep times have higher white blood cell counts.

On the Elite II, press the Left and Right buttons for a few seconds. What are the AHI, AI and HI values?

You may be having more Apnea events. My cousin just had to have her pressure bumped up, she had body aches and pains all over again.

Count me in. Since the time change I've had those zombie feelings. I wish they'd just pick a time and stick with it.

Changing the time has bothered me for years, but this is the first time we've done this stupid dance since I've been on cpap. I feel your fogginess! I think anything that disrupts our schedules can have an effect on our therapy and how we feel; on the other hand, I've met lots of folks who claim changing time never bothers them. Guess it's a very individual thing...kinda like cpap therapy.

While we're on the subject, can anybody explain why we keep switching time? I've heard it "saves money," (how? for who?) and that it "helps the farmers," (aren't they in the fields from can't see to can't see, no matter what the clock says?) I think I'd handle the semi-annual time tilt boogie better if I saw a clear reason for having it. Any ideas?

Thanks to everybody on this forum for all the knowledge I've gained about cpap therapy, and please excuse my rant.

Thanks for the link, Warrior. I think it's fascinating that we persist in messing with the time with no clear evidence that it's more beneficial than leaving well enough alone. Together, we're collectively more stupid than any of us could possibly be on our own. Amazing.

You guys could move to Arizona, where we don't change the clocks.
Veni, vidi, Velcro. I came, I saw, I stuck around.

Amen to the time change enigma. I wonder if I will live long enough to see it disappear?
I hope it does what ever folks, who make the rules, expect the hour change to do. I would be sad to think this was all just a joke.
