SLEEP ON BACK OR SIDE?

Post by Suzs » Thu Mar 04, 2010 11:35 am

I have used CPAP off & on as I tend to only get 4-5 hours of sleep before it gets to be aggravating. Do you CPAP wearers sleep on your back or side & Does it make a difference. Also, my doctor said if I would lose 30 pounds (I weigh 145 and am 5 ft 2 in) my problem may go away. I've heard others who have gone to him and he quotes the same # of pounds. Anyone able to lose weight and not have to use the machine? Thanks in advance for your help. The Suzs

i've only been using my machine for 2 weeks approx, but i have the same problem as you. i end up waking up after 4-5 hours. i do try to switch up from back to side or even stomache, though it can be hard to find a stomache position that doesn't disrupt the mask.

Your apneas may or may not go away when you lose weight. I'm 5'7" and weighed 126 pounds when I was diagnosed. I was prescribed a pressure of 16. The print-out that my Dr. gave me said that I should lose weight. When questioned, "Where, exactly, do you want me to lose weight?", the Dr. just said "Everyone should lose a little weight." ???????? I think it is standard for doctors to say that.

I also have to sleep on my back even though I know that I had more apneas in the supine position during my sleep study. Due to past injuries, it hurts to roll over and stay on my right shoulder. I would say that most people have more apneas whilst on their backs. An Auto CPAP should be able to adjust the pressure to accomodate the changes in position.

Hope that helps,
Bev

I sleep on both sides and my back. The trick is finding a mask that allows you to move and not leak.

I think I may have found it, I won't know for sure until I sleep with it.

Yes, that is the key. I hope your new mask works well for you.

I sleeps on all sides tossin n turnin any which way (route hose over top of head for this style of sleeping).

I have lost nearly 100 lbs since starting PAP treatment ... still on the hose though. Have more lbs to lose but I have no expectaions of getting off the hose since I'm certain I had this condition since my 20's when I was young, fit, and active.

Hate to disappoint you, but I doubt it will. A *few* people see a reduction in sleep apnea when they loose weight. As a teen at LESS than ideal weight I had sleep apnea. So, weight does not always cause sleep apnea. It can make it worse. But it seems as if it rarely is the cause of it.

I have the ResMed UltraMirage ffm. I have found a way to route my hose up and kind of over my head as I sleep on my side. I've always been a side sleeper, and it's nearly impossible for me to sleep comfortably with my cpap on when I'm on my back.

I should add a caveat: when I sleep on my left side, I don't have to work as hard to find a place for my hose! It just hangs naturally then.

Many of us have find that if we sleep on our backs, our apneas are higher, because the tongue falls back and closes the airway. That may or may not apply to you. It should be part of your sleep study/titration report. If you haven't received a copy, you should request one, and see if that was observed with you.

Since I sleep on my side, I needed a firmer pillow, and sleep on the edge of it, so my mask hangs off and the air can vent out. I also put a pillow between my knees so my back and hips are not strained. When I turn to the other side, I've learned to move everything with me. You just get used to it.

Also, I use a hoze hanger, so it is out of my way when I move around.

I sleep on my side. I just can't fall asleep on my back. I use to sleep on my stomach but because of of my hernia I can't do sleep on my stomach. My hernia won't be fix until I lose more weight.

I sleep on my back normally and switch up for a little while on my side. Mostly on my back though.
