Hybrid mask--yes or no?
I have a problem with my mouth dropping open. I wake up with my throat parched. I have tried taping and I wake up in a panic. I tried several full face masks and could not find one that did not leak badly. I just read about a hybrid mask. Can anyone tell me their experience with one. I'm especially interested in the Hybrid Universal Interface by Devilbiss or the Resmed Mirage Liberty. Or any other that might work.

Hi, debbie, and welcome to the forum.sleepydebbie wrote:I have a problem with my mouth dropping open. I wake up with my throat parched. I have tried taping and I wake up in a panic. I use the Hybrid mask, and I love it. There are a few differences between the Liberty and the Hybrid. The Liberty comes in small or large. The Hybrid comes with all three oral cushions (small, medium and large), and the nasal pillows are height-adjustable. The Hybrid also has a chinflap (not a chinstrap to keep your mouth closed, but it does encourage me to breathe through my nose). I find that it stabilizes the mask on my face.
Some like the Hybrid over the Liberty, others vice-versa. I've tried both, and the Hybrid is a better fit for me). I do, however, have to employ a "fix" with my Hybrid to keep the nasal pillows securely in place. (I had the same issue with the Liberty.)
Hope that helps.
Veni, vidi, Velcro. I came, I saw, I stuck around.

Re: Hybrid mask--yes or no?
I have used both the Hybrid and the Mirage Liberty.
I started using the Hybrid after I found that I had too many leaks with a full-face mask, and couldn't stand all of the taping etc. with a nasal mask. It was a huge improvement. In fact, I was buying it out-of-pocket since my insurance-covered DME didn't carry it.
About six months later the Liberty came on the market, and my DME suggested I give it a try. It's much smaller and lighter, and the head gear seems to have a better design - at least for my head and face. It took a couple of nights to get it just right. Now, when I replace the mask I just transfer the headgear from the old one so that I don't have to refit it every time.
I did have some trouble with leaks from the nasal pillows. Folks on this board suggested that I make a small loop out of dental floss that would keep the pillows from separating during the night. That did the trick. No more leaks, and I haven't looked back. I wear a small mask with large pillows.
I've shown the Liberty to two other folks in my church, and they've both switched and like it.
So, for me the "Hybrid" concept was a big winner.
In summary, the Liberty wins for me because it's lighter and has better headgear. But, I had to make modifications to avoid leaks around the pillows.
Good luck finding what works best for you!
