Sleep Labs vs. Home
When I went to the Sleep Center for my follow up "pajama party" things weren't too bad. I arrived at 8pm and after all is said and done got to sleep around 10pm. They fitted me with a mask and machine, hooked up all the wires and I actually slept for 5 hours straight. If the Tech hadn't woke me up I probally wouldn't have sleep longer. But now that I am in the comfort of my own bed, no wires and my won machine, I have yet to achieve more than 2 hours at a time. After they did a reset on my machine yesterday I had such high hopes for a restful night.
Prior to the CPAP, I have used a oral appliance and oxygen at night....I would sleep between 4-5 hrs at a time, but never felt rested and Doc's told me I had to have the CPAP since I was suffering extreme sleep depravation. I know there is a period of adjustment for the CPAP.....I just don't know why sleep was more successful at the Sleep Lab?

[quote="FarmerJill" why sleep was more successful at the Sleep Lab?[/quote]...Did they give you a sleeping pill that night? (just asking)

How were things different in the sleep lab? firmness of bed, pillow, temperature of room, quietness/darkness, type of mask? If you can identify what worked better, then perhaps you could duplicate that at home.
Get a copy of your sleep study and/or titration report. And a copy of your prescription. These are part of your medical records.

No sleeping meds.....actually the sleep center was uncomfortable for me...i.e; too hot, small hospital bed, all the wires...etc. But for some reason I slept better. The new Tech I see thinks it may have had something to do with the manual titration of my pressure. I used the same mask and machine as I have now and brought my own pillow.
My own bed is very comfortable and I sleep with the head raised 6 inches. They have me calling in each morning now to report how I slept....and for tonight, the machine will stay at the set pressure of 7 all night. They suggested I take something over the counter for sleep tonight.

It's the expectations.
You didn't have them too high for the sleep lab, and so you were able to relax into whatever happened. But for you night at home, you were expecting a great night -- which immediately works against getting one.

And now here is my secret, a very simple secret; it is only with the heart that one can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye.

Listen to ozi, ozi knows! I completely agree, although for me, I had the opposite happen. My expectations were so high for a good night sleep at the lab, I didn't get one. When I got my machine home, I slept much better.ozij wrote:It's the expectations.

Re: Sleep Labs vs. Home
Absolutely concur!! My initial sleep lab was not bad, but my tritation was a mess, and although I finally slept, I only did so for around 4 hours. Most of the issue was that I was really a nervous wreck after hearing about my OSA, and I wanted everything to go perfectly.ozij wrote:It's the expectations.

Funny though, even though I only slept about 4 hours, I felt better than I had in weeks.

Re: Sleep Labs vs. Home
Hi,
I surely can relate, I slept great during sleep study Once I began cpap therapy, was wondering why I wasn't sleeping as well. Figured out, tehcnicians were there to assist me, if anything happened during sleep, they were making adjustments as I slept, I had nothing to do prior to sleep, 3 channels on tv were news stations, so I had nothing at the sleep lab to keep my adrenaline pumping, no computer, good movie etc.... So I relaxed and fell asleep.
For me, sleeping poorly since cpap treatment is due to excitment (adrenaline) one day, I will sleep well & feel well again. Very difficult for me to relax, till this day comes.
Hang in there, we all will get there soon.

Re: Sleep Labs vs. Home
I had taken my sleep study in my own comfy bed and I sent the info in through FedEx. Then when I was dianosed I had to go in and take a class on how to use the cpap.
