upper stomach gas
upper stomach gas
Hello all, bedeer here once more . The full face mask is working well. I am wondering if it is possible that the continuous air would be giving me a gas problem in the upper stomach , rather painful and embarassing. Is there a possibility of this & what can remedy this?

Yup. It's known as "aerophagia". Search on that and you will find lots of posts and suggestions:bedeer wrote:Hello all, bedeer here once more . The full face mask is working well. No problem. We are all in this together. The advantage of this forum is that we can share what works for us. Sometimes it offers things we would never think of to help. For example, I saw such a simple solution to gas in the stomach. One poster noted they used a diet clear soad (7-Up or Sprite or Gingerale) to help reduce the gas without making matters worse. Simple. Creative. And it works!
Collective wisdom can be helpful.

Re: upper stomach gas
The problem is when the gas makes its way down AFTER leaving home. One just excuses oneself and goes to the washroom or for a breath of fresh air. As for air in the upper regions; honestly, I have always been a silent burper but at times it does get rather uncomfortable. I like the suggestion of a clear soda to get things working and have taken to loosening my belt when I am able to when the problem arises.
I think one also has to maintain a sense of humour about such things as a matter of survival. Lord knows that life is tough enough as it is.
Fortunately this has not been a great problem here. I have enough other problems to deal with but not as serious as many, for which I give thanks every day.
I am also thinking that moving to the APAP has given me some relief as the pressures are lower than with my CPAP and consequently the swallowing of air is mitigated.

Re: upper stomach gas
I'm a new CPAP user... and don't know all the lingo yet... What's the diff between a CPAP and APAP machine and how will APAP be a better preventer of swallowed air?
I have this problem.. and have my settings turned down as low as they can go to a 5( so I'm told) and I still have the problem. Often I don't realize I'm gulping air until 3 am and feel as if I've swallowed a basketball! Help! Any ideas?

CPAP is Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (PAP). One pressure and that's it.
APAP is Automatic PAP. The machine changes the pressure to try to keep your airway open. If you are not having problems, it lowers the pressure. If you have obstructions, it raises the pressure.
For the "gulping air" problem, do a search on "aerophagia". Lots of people have dealt with it and have some good practical suggestions.

Re: upper stomach gas
My apologies; I did not realize that your issue was quite that serious or problemsome. I'm not sure you can go much below 5 cm O2. I think even the S8 Autoset II starts out at 4 cm. My issue is not nearly as bad and is mainly billiousness, burping and the other thing (which is a whole other story). Not nearly a problemsome issue for me. More a nuisance. I wish I could be of greater assistance, but am afraid I simply don't have the experience in that area (yet).
There are those on here that do I am sure and you are in good hands and amongst friends be assured.

I have aerophagia from time to time...and what works for me is:
sleeping on my left side....and
not eating a heavy meal too close to bedtime

Re: upper stomach gas
As a matter of interest, sleeping on one's left side is supposed to permit trapped gases within to flow more freely, although depending on which way you are aimed your spouse may have to get used to this. Now that it is mentioned I find that this also assists me.SleepyT wrote:I have aerophagia from time to time...and what works for me is:

As far as meals are concerned, as a diabetic I generally eat a very light snack an hour before retiring, but take note that I never eat, at any time of the day, any of the foods that are known to create gases within, such as beans, cabbage and lentils and so on. That will just exacerbate your problems. My wife says I am a 'gas making machine' as demonstrated when we were on a weight loss program that included copious quantities of cabbage vegetable soup to fill the tummy (zero calories).
Don't give up.
