Food before bedtime, diabetes and cpap???

Post by PurpleSwan3033 » Sun Feb 14, 2010 9:14 am

What does your eating schedule have to do with how well you sleep on cpap therapy? Does it matter how close to your bedtime you eat a meal or a snack? I am a diabetic and I seem to have problems sleeping when I eat something before I go to bed. I seem to sleep better if I do not eat anything at least two hours before bedtime but that is a difficult schedule to maintain. Is this my imagination or part of my adjustment period, or what? I have been using my cpap machine for about 5 months now. Thanks for your responses.

With mine... depends on what I eat.

If it's something that raises my blood sugar, or if my blood sugar's already high... that's when I'll have trouble sleeping.

If my blood sugar's low...all I want to do is sleep.

For a lot of people, the more they eat closer to bedtime, the more GERD they have to deal with.

I agree with cflame1. It is usually not a good idea for me to have a high carb snack before bedtime. But something that is a high protein item can actually help avoid a "liver dump" during the night. So, some meat, some cheese. That type of thing can help. Not too much since that can (as Julie notes) trigger some acid reflux.

Eating a large meal before bedtime is very taxing on you, digestion is a huge process for your body, sleep is when you try to get some rest, not rev up the system. Most people will sleep much better without a full belly. A small snack would probably be the best for most folks, whether on cpap or not.

I also have type II diabetes. I usually don't eat before bedtime, but will take my blood sugar before bedtime and if I am hungry, I will have a mozzarella cheese stick. I also take Humulin "N" before bed - a slow acting insulin, but only twice in the last 6 months have I been woken feeling a little shaky with a low blood sugar. The CPAP has nothing to do with my diabetes regimin - in other words, I change nothing that I am doing for my diabetes. The most disruptive thing for me was that last night my dogs decided it would be a fine idea to go out at 4:15 a.m. (My little shit tzu girl loves to eat snow!).

Wishing you a restful, restorative, sleep,

Jersey Girl
