High Mask Prices---Cheap Quality

Post by DannyPh » Mon Feb 08, 2010 11:11 am

I have had the Resmed Mirage Liberty Hybrid for less than a month and last night one of the Plastic Attachments for the Head Gear Broke in the middle of the Night. No Fixable by any Means so I called My Dme Supplier for a Replacement Frame as was told that now they are awaiting on a referral from my PCP. I have never needed a referral before so I asked Why Now and they replied --Part of the Obama Regime on Health Care--Go Figure. They said that Now MY Insurance Carrier( BC/BS of Texas) is required to have the referral Yearly. So, Now I am waiting on them and have to resort back to the Swift II Nasal Pillows while I await them to get things fixed. Thanks Obama! I don't get the Good therapy with the Nasal Pillows that I get with the FF Mask so the Saga Continues for me. I am just tired of Fighting the Chin Strap and and still looking for the Perfect Chin strap. I might try the Rip Van Winkle chin strap that is offered on CPAP Auction.

replacing the maskis not a insurance issue in this case. Manufacturers warranty should allow your DME to replace your mask without question.

This is a ridiculous comment. Does not even make sense. More likely BCBSTX is requiring a new "referral."
But rrj is right, this is a warranty issue not an insurance issue.

And you believed them? No healthcare plan or regulations have passed that would change this. They just don't want to do their job. Go lean on them.

A similar thing happened to me just 3 months ago. I accidentally broke the head gear part of my ComfortGel Nose Mask. I have Apria and they wanted to charge me $140 to replace the mask (as it happens the University Of Pennsylvania Sleep Center - where I had my sleep study done - charged me $20 to replace the mask ... that's right, just $20.)

By the way, don't blame Obama. The propagandistic comment made to you was an ignorant allegation. My insurance company also happens to be BC/BS of Texas (my company is based in Addison, TX) ... if you want to blame someone, blame our greedy insurance company.

I'm not sure about the Quattro quality but I have a Resmed Mirage Softgel and I am very impressed with the mask quality. I have a couple of comfortgels which are comfortable but Resmed has Respironics beat on quality in my opinion. Plus the Resmeds are made in Australia and not in China.

I agree, the prices are way too high these things, $200+ from DME, $125 Online, $45-$60 online on the auction. The return policy has something to do with that but look for 4 times the price you could buy 4 different masks and be even.
