Talk with the doctor. Talk with the DME. Have the doctor write the prescription for a fully data capable machine, which at least records leaks, pressure, apneas and hypopneas. You can explain that you want to monitor how well you are doing, so if you have problems you can bring back the data so your doctor can decide if further testing is needed. You want to keep down your medical costs and having more data to help the doctor decide should help do that. That might work.tbone05241997 wrote:... i am using a borrowed machine right now it is set at 12 which is my precript. i cant wait to see how my own machine and mask that are set for me will do. i have not snored in 3 nites and my wife is very happy. how do i get my insurabce to get me a good machine that records all the info i need? i have insure oklahoma. ...

Re: worried 142 apnea per hour
Tbone, yes, 142 apneas per hour is a lot, but xpap therapy is designed to treat exactly that. Imagine how you will feel when you're having an AHI of 5 or less, and getting real quality of sleep. My number of events was not as high as yours, but I guarantee that I felt just as crappy. So, you're taking the right steps to health, and proper well-being.
Re: worried 142 apnea per hour
You may want to get a copy of the charts and graphs, not just the summary information, if you can. It is good to have it all on file. That information can help you make descisions down the road, with your doctor's input, on what exact therapy pressure does best for you over time sleeping in your own bed as you check the efficacy data from your machine.tbone05241997 wrote:http://www.flickr.com/photos/46981506@N04/

It looks like you will benefit greatly from PAP therapy and staying off of your back when you sleep.
If you can increase your exercise activity and improve your diet (which becomes possible as PAP therapy improves your ability to do those things) you should find long-term success in treating the OSA.
The main thing now is getting a machine that will give you leak and AHI information so you can monitor your therapy and make it as successful as possible. That is particularly important for those of us with apnea trouble as severe as we have it. Once you have your prescription, you may need to find out which DMEs (durable medical equipment companies) are considered in-network for you so you can call around to see which ones are willing to provide you a machine that tells you your leak and AHI information every morning from the screen. Don't accept one that will not do that. Figure out what everything will cost you, total, out of pocket. It ends up being cheaper for some of us to buy out of pocket online from CPAP.com, our hosts.
Here is Rested Gal's list:
Here are examples of full-data machines (with humidifiers) that might meet your needs.rested gal wrote:My list of machines that record "full data" (AHI and leak info) and those that don't -- updated through Jan. 2010:

My personal first choice these days is this auto-titrating machine, or APAP:

My personal second choice is a CPAP machine that is not an auto, but a good machine, in my opinion:

Do your homework, since these are only two possibilities, and there are other brands that are just as good, if not better, in the judgment of many, as long as they are in Rested Gal's list, above. And CPAP.com, our host for this forum, is not the only place to buy the machines, either. (Just the best. )
I wish you the best. Glad you found us. Keep asking questions.

i tried to get the charts. the sleep people said they cannot give them to me without request from dr. do i just ask my doc to get them for me?
Re: worried 142 apnea per hour
If you live in the United States, I believe you were just lied to. All test data is yours, by law, as I understand it. But if you want to be a nice guy (generally a good policy, I guess), play their game their way. A phone call to your doc's office should be all that it would take. I asked my primary-care doc's office people to make the copies for me, rather than the sleep doc's office people.tbone05241997 wrote:i tried to get the charts. the sleep people said they cannot give them to me without request from dr. do i just ask my doc to get them for me?
It is a courtesy to mask out identifying info of the place you had your tests and the doctor and the location and the date, etc., by the way, if you post info. I should have mentioned that earlier. You want to protect other people's anonymity along with your own.

Re: worried 142 apnea per hour
Since I had my results sent to my primary physician all I had to do was call them and they made me a copy w/o any problem. You should be able to do the same. Good luck with your therapy.tbone05241997 wrote:i tried to get the charts. the sleep people said they cannot give them to me without request from dr. do i just ask my doc to get them for me?

I am so sorry to hear about your brother's very serious health problems, tbone. I want you to know my thoughts and prayers are with you.tbone05241997 wrote:thank you all youve been so encouraging. i am using a borrowed machine right now it is set at 12 which is my precript. i cant wait to see how my own machine and mask that are set for me will do. i have not snored in 3 nites and my wife is very happy. how do i get my insurabce to get me a good machine that records all the info i need? i have insure oklahoma. thanx again. i have had insurance for 30 days i scares me that i would have gone on for years more if not for the insurance. i have a brother who is 25 and very ill. he has a form of lupus that attacks his organs not his joints. heis in heart failure along with pulmonary hypertension. and many other ailment but the docs are split on the desease causing the heart failure or the apnea. they lean toward the apnea. he also has pulmonary fibrosis which is incurable. that was cause by a blood disorder he has that thinkens his blood. thank you for you support and i will count on more.

Re: worried 142 apnea per hour
It might be worth starting a thread with that as the subject line. Such questions are easily missed this far into a thread. Just a thought.tbone05241997 wrote:DOES ANYONE HAPPEN TO USE INSURE OKLAHOMA? i just wonder how they are as far as getting the right machine and such things, sorry for the all caps. i want to thank ou guys again for the support
Re: worried 142 apnea per hour
My husband was diagnosed with 142 per hour and the VA Tech. said it was the WORST
CASE HE HAD EVER SEEN. The said thing is that my husband has had this for 42+ years!
At least they FINALLY got him a CPAP machine and it's helping tremendously!
