I have a new HC254 autotritation cpap and have ordered the performance maximizer software. Until this software arrives and I have the software up and running I must rely on the LCD screen to review last nights results. One of the display Icons is a drawing of a KEY which is defined as "check sum": allows usage to be checked. What is this information about and how can I use it to evaluate my nocturnal events?

A checksum is usually a calculation to check that data has been sent and received correctly. It probably won't add to your knowledge of how you got on during the night.

They note that a checksum is:

A value used to ensure data are stored or transmitted without error. It is created by calculating the binary values in a block of data using some algorithm and storing the results with the data. When the data are retrieved from memory or received at the other end of a network, a new checksum is computed and matched against the existing checksum. A non-match indicates an error.

Why would an equipment manufacturer provide a checksum? Well, one reason is that if your DME needs to know the values are correct so they can show your compliance to xPAP therapy. When they call and ask you to read off the values, they have a method to ascertain the values you provide are correct and accurate. Was that an 8 or a 9 or a 6 in that display? Or perhaps you report the average hours used is 8 hours and it is in fact 3 hours. The checksum will allow the DME to know if an error was made reading or providing the values that SHOULD have been supplied to them.

Hi---Thanks to those that have taken time to respond to my question about the LCD--"KEY" icon.

When I receive the performance maximizer software I shall share my observations about my new F&P 254 auto titration APAP as compared with my subjective observations about my S8 Autoset II APAP using ResScan software.
